Puppy Love & a Warm Tail

After a busy day at Kennedy airport, making Christmas exchanges, and buying dog supplies, Mitch was spent and ready to wind down. However, he knew he had one last thing to contend with before the night was over.

“Danny, for the last time get that dog off the bed!” Mitch was losing his patience.

“He doesn't like sleeping in the crate,” Danny tried to persuade. He couldn't believe his crabby Daddy was being so heartless.

“That's too bad, Danny. Until he is house trained, that is where he will be sleeping.”

“Does that mean once he's trained he can sleep with us?” Danny held on to his stubborn optimism.

“No, Danny, it does not mean that. There are five of us in one bed. There is no room for a dog.”

“He's just a little thing and he doesn't like to be by himself,” Danny persisted in defense of his new puppy.

“He'll get used to it. And he won't always be small,” Mitch countered.

“But he is now,” Danny said with a pout.

“He is not going to get used to being on the bed, or any of the furniture. Now, this conversation is over,” Mitch stated more sternly.

“That's just mean,” Danny whined under his breath.

“You'll survive and so will your pup,” Mitch said, unmoved by Danny's mumbled grievance.

Huffing dramatically, Danny heaved himself up to retrieve his puppy that had jumped off the bed in chase of his new, squeaky, blue ball.

Yap! Yap! Yap! Nicky barked in frustration when his toy rolled under the bed.

Danny crawled to his stomach to fetch his puppy's ball and reached his arm under the bed as far as he could. “Damn!” he cursed in frustration at being several inches too short.

Yap! Yap! Nicky barked in encouragement.

Danny flattened himself as much as he could and scooted under the bed.

“I'll get it.” TJ reached under the bed from the other side. He quickly retrieved the ball and stood up. “Here, boy,” he called to the pup.

Nicky wagged his tail and barked at TJ like he was his hero. TJ laughed and rolled the ball to him.

“Oww!” Danny shouted as he bonked his head crawling out from under the bed.

The puppy skidded on his big clumsy paws as the ball rolled past him and out the bedroom door. Antonio found the puppy barking at the edge of the landing too afraid to make the journey down the mountain in search of his bouncing toy. The kindhearted large man brought the ball to the puppy. He scooped up Nicky at the top of the stairs as he headed to the master bedroom.

“It's time for this little one to go to bed, don't you think, Danny?” Antonio asked, handing the puppy to him.

Danny hugged Nicky to his chest. “Time to go into your cage,” he told his pup.

“It's a crate, not a cage.”

“It’s more like a jail,” Danny muttered.

“Dogs like the security of closed in places. It reminds them of a den,” Antonio explained patiently.

“Not this dog. Besides, puppies don't like to be alone,” Danny argued stubbornly.
