My anticipation was climbing as we made our way to the building where Gideon taught his first-year classes. My heart raced, and I kept my eyes on the ground, afraid to catch a glimpse of Owen.
Why was it that a boy could terrify me so badly after everything Iâd already been through? I leaned against Phina and linked arms with her. She offered me a small smile, a silent show of support. We both knew that whatever happened next when it came to me and Owen would define everything that happened after. And I was terrified that Iâd lose him over this. Even if a love spell had been in effect, I genuinely cared for him. But that didnât mean he felt the same, no matter how much I hoped it did.
I took a deep breath to steady myself as Phina pulled open the door to the lecture hall and motioned for me to go in ahead of her. Iâd expected my big return to campus to be this huge dramatic moment, and yet⦠Absolutely nothing out of the ordinary happened. No one spared me a glance, nor were there whispers spreading throughout the room like ripples in a pond.
It was just another day at Darnborn.
We found Gideon standing in front of the door that led to his Demons and Digital Media class, and as we approached, I could feel his eyes on me. Iâd fully expected him to come banging on my door yesterday, but Agatha must have talked him out of it, because heâd actually given me the space I needed. Although, judging from the way he was eyeing me now, that had been a temporary courtesy.
Phina and I slipped into the classroom and grabbed seats near the back. A moment later, the professor closed the door behind him and paced to the front center of the room to begin his lecture on the allure of the Void and its many dangers.
I fidgeted in my seat whenever his gaze landed on me. It felt like a joke for me to be here.
I not only knew the Void better than anyoneâincluding Gideonâ but I could also still feel it churning inside of me. What I didnât understand was why. Why was I still connected to that place between places, and why hadnât my eyes turned black like Gideon and the other Restless? What made me so different? I feared that whatever the answer may be, I wouldnât like it very much.
My mind drifted as Gideon continued to talk, bouncing from thought to thought as I somehow managed to jot down notes at the same time. I contemplated the Void and my fatherâs ties to it and reminisced about all the happy times Owen and I had had together. Everything good in my life had been tainted with magic, leaving me to wonder what was real or not, what was good or evil, what was the point of my strange powers?
Then I remembered the fog that dragged me to the Void in the first place.
