CHAPTER FORTY-THREE

Roxy

Distance. It’s a concept that can be measured in miles—or feelings. I frequently played on the latter—that’s just the nature of my job. In this case, it was physical distance that apparently eased Shaina’s mind. Her scowl softened with each passing mile and each time Tina expressed interest in a new sight outside the car. As the excitement of our escape faded, our drive morphed into a normal “family” outing with the girls caught up in the outside world. Although the hard edge of Shaina’s mood had softened, I grew more concerned. Where was Skip?

It was time to make a decision about our destination. I called the person at the center of Skip’s little information universe, Baldorf, to give him the bad news. “We’re on our way to your place.”

“We? We, who?”

“All of us. Shaina, Tina, Lily, and me. Let’s cut right to it, Baldorf, I want to know where Skip is. Tell me now or I’ll feed the kids a ton of caffeine and sugar before we get there.”

“You, you can’t come here. I don’t have room—I don’t—”

“Stuff it. We’re on our way. You got me into this, so you’re in it, too. The only question is how painful I make this for you. If the sugar and caffeine don’t work, I can get really creative.”

My phone bleeped that a call was waiting. I said, “You got lucky, Skip’s on the other line.” After disconnecting Baldorf, I took a deep breath while reminding myself to keep cool because whatever Skip was doing was for me. I should not be angry with the man, I should be thanking him. “Hey.”

“Hey, yourself.”

His voice was soft in my ear, melting my annoyance at having been left out of his plans. “Where are you?”

“Someplace I didn’t expect to be. I came to L.A. to get some background on someone for a friend—a very close friend.”

Talk about conflicted. I wanted that friend to be me, but I was terrified—what if it wasn’t? Could this be our undoing? “Oh? What—did you—find out?”

“This friend of mine got involved in something that went the wrong way. I’m trying to help . . .” He paused for a moment, “Um, solve her problem.”

My heart nearly stopped. So far, no names. So far, we had distance. So far, the tightness in my throat wasn’t letting me tap into my anger. We could only dodge this issue for a short time. I bit at my lower lip, desperate to not break down and confess. “What problem does—she—have?”

“Several. There’s her boyfriend, a guy who loves her deeply, but can’t help interfering when he knows she’s in trouble.”

I cleared my throat—the lump was there, growing. He still cared? “Sounds familiar.”

“She’s also got a dead body and cops trying to find her friend that got her into the mess in the first place. Her friend’s disappeared, by the way.”

“Anita’s missing?” I blurted. Game over, time to be a big girl. Face this head on. “When did you find that out?”

“Just now. I’m—uh, visiting—her place.
