Chapter Four

“We can’t go after him,” Luka snapped. They’d been having the same argument for the past week. Jovan kept insisting they retrieve Niall, but Luka thought they should wait for him to return. Surely he wouldn’t claim them, then vanish? Luka’s neck still ached from where Niall had placed his fae bonding mark. As days passed with no communication, Jovan had become surlier with each hour and Luka’s inner lion had risen up with equal aggression. They each bore scratch marks of their discontent.

“Sure we can. No one will spot us. We can make it look like a kidnapping. We just won’t ask for a ransom.” The wild expression in Jovan’s eyes had also increased over the past seven days. Their lions were uneasy, pacing back and forth and snarling inside, all because the fae they’d fucked had left afterward. Why couldn’t he have stayed there? He belonged to them, after all, both lions agreed.

“He had to go back home, Jovan.”

“Why!” Jovan shouted. “Why did he have to go back? He belongs with us, not them! They don’t treat him right!” Jovan’s voice took on a low growl, the lion rising to the surface.

Luka’s inner beast snarled back. “We can’t go charging in there if we don’t know he’s in danger. We’ll make fools of ourselves and possibly create a shifter/fae incident that will get us hunted!”

“There’s something wrong in a castle where a beautiful man is a virgin and they need guards to drag him back home.” Jovan’s handsome face didn’t change expression. If Luka didn’t do something, his mate would charge in there after Niall and get himself killed.

“There are other reasons guards could come for him. Do you think he’s a criminal?”

They’d gone back and forth over different scenarios since Niall had left. Why had guards come to fetch him? Why did he not look surprised? How come he didn’t fight them? “No. I think he was hiding from someone but not because he’s done anything wrong. He was too honest. He even told us he’s a virgin.”

“He was but we took care of that.” Jovan’s wistful smile twisted Luka’s gut. They needed Niall.

“Yes, we did. It was a fine night. From what he said, I bet his mother was involved.” Luka’s skin burned as he remembered their intense evening together. They’d been unable to make love in their bed since. Too many memories and one great loss surrounded them when they slid beneath the covers at night.

As Jovan continued to pick at his favorite topic, raving about Niall’s abandonment, Luka remembered their night together. He recalled in exquisite detail the fae’s smooth skin and natural scent of lush meadows and moonlight. He hadn’t even known the moon had a scent until he’d smelled it on Niall’s body.

Luka’s cat half gave a sad yowl. That’s all it did these days. It was as if his inner feline was on strike. Bring back the pretty fae or take the consequences. “Jo, is your cat acting weird?”

“It misses Niall.
