HE’D spent the night alone.
Tammy wanted to stay. She meant well, and part of him wanted her company, but the other part was damned tired. A different tired than earlier, although maybe jetlag was still a large component of him feeling overwrought. He needed some alone time to recharge. The self-destructive part of him wanted to head around the corner to the one nightclub in Adelaide where he knew he could get—or give—a mindless blowjob. Giving in to something physical and mindless tempted him. But then he thought about a blowjob involving feeder tubes, which of course these days it probably would, and any vague rumblings of a hard-on melted away.
A pathetic shower and a restless night was all he managed, awake at 4:00 a.m. and unable to get back to sleep. He drew the curtains back and watched as the sky trapped in the frame of his window changed from indigo black through to the richest of blues. There were no clouds. Skies didn’t look like this in Russia. There the blue was muted, maybe with a slight purple tinge.
Watching the sky pushed some of the dark thoughts back, but he still couldn’t get past Daniel’s reaction. It couldn’t just have been that he had dropped contact. A long-distance friendship took effort from both sides, and Daniel had not put any effort in either to keep the contact going.
So what was it?
If he was lucky, he wouldn’t have to wait long to find out. While Tammy had kept Daniel in the dark about Nick’s return, she had informed him about the will and Ben’s bequest. To see what condition the shack was in, they had already arranged to take time off work to stay there for two weeks.
Now Daniel knew that Nick would be coming along too.
Tammy thought nothing of mentioning Daniel’s line of work to Nick. For everyone else, it was very old news, but for Nick it was still a surprise. The three of them, Ben, Daniel, and he, had all gone to study architecture and interior design at university, with big plans to start their own firm and take on the world in Eco-design. They’d all been good at their studies. Yet only Ben had made good on his degree. Daniel chucked the three years he’d completed not long after Nick had left—to become a high school English teacher, of all things.
Nick had not known that.
Yet another example of how he had completely neglected the people who were supposed to matter the most to him.
Tammy had arranged to pick him up from the hotel at 7:00 a.m. Daniel would already be in the car.
They all knew the route. Leaving so early, they would miss any traffic and the heat as they travelled north-east to the river.
With an hour to spare, Nick went downstairs and checked out of his room, electing to spend as much time as he could in the Hilton’s breakfast bar.
Given how expensive and difficult food seemed to be for locals, it was a bit of a shock to see a buffet spread where one could just help oneself.
