CHAPTER 24

It was six-thirty when we parked the car and went into the house. We had stopped on the way and bought a large pizza to take home. While I took Chelsea out and fed her, Cyndi got out plates and glasses; Lander raided the fridge. “What do you all want to drink?” he asked as he picked up a beer for himself.

“I want water,” Cyndi said.

“I’ll take a coke,” I answered.

Cyndi looked at Bill. “Okay, tell me about my research. What do I look for?”

Bill explained to Cyndi what he was thinking. Both Cyndi and I looked at him like he was kidding. “Believe me, this stuff is real—as impossible as it may seem!” said Bill.

“I’ll get right on it,” said Cyndi. “I’ve got to see it myself before I believe it.”

When Lander and I got up the next morning, Cyndi was stretched out in the recliner with her laptop and iPad with her. She looked up when we entered the room. “This stuff is unbelievable!” she said.

Lander asked, “Have you been up all night?”

She replied, “I guess so. I didn’t realize it. Talk about your science fiction—except it’s not!”

I spoke up. “Try to get some sleep today while we’re gone. We’re going back to Oak Island. We’ll meet this afternoon and discuss it all. We’ve got to hit the road; we’re meeting Bear and Pfieffer at eight.”

“What about breakfast? Do you want me to make you something?” Cyndi started to lay aside her computer.

“No, we don’t have time. We’ll have coffee and a breakfast bar on the way.” I opened the drawer and picked out two K-cups, inserted one of them in the Keurig, and pushed the button. The sound told me when the cup had been filled; I picked it up and handed it to Bill. I waited about thirty seconds and mine was finished. We grabbed two protein bars and a couple of bananas, left the house, and as the door was closing, I called out to Cyndi, “Keep the door locked. See you this afternoon.”
