I’m so glad Friday’s finally here. Wednesday had been exhausting, getting the art work ready to take to the square, and then yesterday had just been long. Thanksgiving, all by myself. We never really celebrated when I was growing up. It was just another day. With Cynthia and Thomas, it was an entirely different matter. I kind of missed sitting at the table loaded with more food than an army could eat, with a golden-brown turkey as the center piece. But not enough to ride in the over-crowded train into the city and back again. I could have gone Wednesday night so I didn’t have the make the trip twice in one day, but I was afraid I’d run into Kian. With my luck, we’d end up with seats next to each other.

So, I stayed home. Cooked a frozen turkey dinner and watched Christmas movies. I was asleep at nine and awake by five this morning. It’s really better this way. We had to be set up at the square by nine and there’s still plenty to do.

Only a handful of kids were allowed to come: Louie, Mick, Carlie and Katie. We had given Marissa the option to, but she wanted to remain back at the school and away from people she didn’t know. The therapists weren’t comfortable with the rest of my art students leaving campus just yet. Not with the potential of crowds and unpleasant shoppers.

The air is brisk, but not too uncomfortable. There was a slight dusting of snow last night, but not enough to hinder anyone driving or walking. The temperature’s supposed to get near fifty so it should be a good day. It’s seven when I meet Jesse at our spot on the square. He greets me with a cup of coffee from his studio. He’s been setting up exhibits since he was in high school and has everything we need to hang the paintings and set the ceramics. Two vans arrive and the kids, along with Hannah and Tara, pile out of one and begin unloading the art from the other

“It’s too cold for me,” Tara grumbles. She’s from New York so this weather shouldn’t bother her, yet she hates the cold.

Hannah just chuckles and thanks Jesse for the coffee he presses into her hand. She then turns to the kids and gathers them around. “Set up the displays, and be careful.”

A few roll their eyes. I have no doubt they’re going to be as careful as they can. This is their work and won’t want it destroyed.

“You will not wander away from this area. You will stay within our sight the entire time.”

The rules had already been drummed into the kids’ heads over the past week. Even before that, after we decided to do the art fair.

“We promise not to go anywhere,” Louie assures her.

Katie raises her hand and Hannah turns to her. “Yes?”

“I just thought of something.” Her face turns slightly pink. “What if we have to use the bathroom?” she whispers.

“If you do, Miss Alexia will accompany you across the street.
