Schuyler sank down on the sofa with a frustrated grunt, his second opened Sam Adams cold against his thigh. He’d stared at the closed apartment door for far too long before fetching the beer. The night had gone so well, and then he’d gone and fucked it up brilliantly.

Barrett hadn’t seemed angry as he left, just irritated. And Schuyler hadn’t started the evening with any intention of kicking Barrett out after they had sex. He’d hoped the man would stay the night, and he’d drop him off at home in the morning before school. Instead, he let his temper get the best of him—an easy thing whenever Matty was concerned. The entire conversation had struck all the wrong chords, and he’d unceremoniously ended what had been a fantastic date.

And now Barrett was walking three miles across town, in the dark.

He launched off the couch, put his beer down on a coaster, then went in search of his cell phone. He dialed a number he had no business calling, and he felt like an even bigger jerk when Rey picked up on his end. “Hello?”

“I need a favor,” Schuyler said.

“Sky? It’s after ten, what’s wrong?”

“I fucked up, Rey, and I need a favor.”

“What happened?”

He explained briefly and without real details. “I just…can you come get him and drive him home? I feel like an absolute jerk, but I know he won’t accept a ride from me even if I went down there.”

“And you think he’ll take one from me?”

“He’s not pissed at you.”

“Sky—”

“I let you borrow my car two months ago to collect your boyfriend from the side of the interstate. I’m calling in the favor.”

Rey gave a deep, resigned sigh. “All right.”

“Thank you.”

“I’ll text you when I’ve dropped him off.”

“All right. Thank you.”

“Yeah.”

They hung up, and Sky flopped back down on the couch to wait for the inevitable text message. He didn’t like dragging Rey—who was one of the few exes that Sky actually regretted hurting—into his love life. And he could imagine Samuel’s reaction to Rey rushing out this late to fix one of Sky’s mistakes.

“I am such an asshole,” he said to the ceiling.

The ceiling did not disagree.
