After knocking three times, there was still no answer. Bridge was getting impatient.

“I think you read the tea leaves incorrectly.”

“Shush,” Nicole replied.

Undeterred, she knocked again. She knew at some point this woman would answer. Well, she hoped more than anything. Wanting to speed up the process, Nicole then started speaking in Spanish. She didn’t consider herself fluent, but she knew enough to get by and have a conversation for the most part. Bridge could understand a few things here or there, but when it came to conversing in the language, he left that up to his girlfriend.

“I know you’re in there and you saw what happened outside,” Nicole said in Spanish. “We’re looking for Andrea Salazar. We think she’s in trouble. We’re trying to help her from the likes of the bad people that we were just fighting.”

They stood there in silence for a few more seconds. Bridge thought it was a lost cause.

“Don’t think it’s working.”

“Just give it a minute,” Nicole replied.

“One.”

“I said a minute, not a second.”

“Let’s just go.”

“Shh.”

Nicole thought she heard something and put her ear closer to the door. It sounded like someone was walking, getting closer.

“They’re coming.”

“Oh, good,” Bridge said. “I was beginning to think they weren’t gonna answer.”

Nicole was about to admonish him again but didn’t get the chance as the door opened. It only opened wide enough for the woman’s face to show, but it was enough. Nicole pleasantly smiled at her.

“Who are you?” the woman asked, speaking Spanish.

Nicole responded, speaking the same language. “I am Nicole, and this is Luke.”

“How do you know Andrea?”

“Honestly, we don’t. Not very well. We were sent here to find her by people she was working with. They are very worried about her and think something has happened to her. Judging by the looks of her apartment, they were right. Do you know the people who we were up there with?”

“They are bad men. I have seen them before.”

“Do you know who they work for?”

“I shouldn’t say.”

“Nothing you tell us will ever be heard by anyone else,” Nicole said. “This is just between us.”

“How do I know you tell me the truth?”

Nicole hesitated before answering, trying to think of the best response. “Because if I wasn’t, I probably wouldn’t be standing here asking you questions. I would be acting like the men we just fought. And I wouldn’t have been fighting them to begin with.”

The woman nodded. “I suppose that is true.”

“We only want to help Andrea. She is in a bad situation. We want to get her out of here before it is too late.”

“Ask about the men up there,” Bridge said.

“The men we fought,” Nicole said. “Who do they work for?”

“Javier Soto,” the woman answered. “They work for him.”

“We thought so. Do you know what happened to Andrea?”

The woman shook her head. “One day she just vanished.”

“Do you know why?”

“I know it has something to do with Soto.”

“He took her?”

The woman shook her head again. “No. I believe they were dating, or had some sort of relationship for a while.
