Calvin sped down the road going as fast as he dared. He’d been so involved with the cop that it took him a minute to see a notification on his phone telling him somebody was in the basement of the old Whittington property. He’d sworn and almost punched the wall when he saw the video. The first thing he did was call Victor to see who was nearby.

Tommy and Anthony were the closest.

Grimacing as he called, Calvin instructed them to go for the intercept, hoping the half-wrecked vehicle was up for the task and didn’t fall apart on the way. He then ordered the rest of his men to the same address.

Everybody else was further out than Calvin. He’d be the second vehicle on the scene. That made it imperative he got there as fast as possible. The drive would take Calvin eleven minutes. Maybe seven if he sped, but he didn’t dare do so now while going through Moscow.

Not this time of night. Not right after his meeting with Officer Sharansky.

Keeping his foot off the accelerator was difficult, but he had to do it. He didn’t want to get pulled over for speeding and give that idiot Sharansky a reason to search his car and ask even more probing questions.

He was glad for his caution a moment later when he turned a corner and found Sharansky’s squad car sitting there, almost as if he’d been waiting for Calvin.

It can’t be a coincidence he’s waiting on the road I have to take to the Whittington place, Calvin thought, wishing he’d have just taken care of Sharansky when he’d had the opportunity. He belatedly realized it was also the road out to Marv Hawk’s place.

Things were escalating faster than Calvin had thought possible. Maintaining his composure was becoming difficult.

Even though Calvin was glad he’d had the foresight to take it slow, he had a feeling Officer Sharansky would follow him, whatever direction he went.

Sure enough, a moment after Calvin passed, Officer Sharansky pulled out and trailed behind. There was one car in between, but Calvin wasn’t fooled.

What am I gonna do? Calvin wondered.

He called Tommy. “You there?”

“I just got to the house. I see their car, but I don’t see them.”

He heard a grunt as Tommy and Anthony got out. The doors shut. Gravel crunched under their feet as they approached the Whittington place.

“They’re gonna ambush you,” Calvin said. “But you must take them alive. Got it?”

“Alive. Sure. We’ll take care of it.”

“Keep this line open.” Calvin was about to explain how Officer Sharansky was following him but decided he didn’t want his men to know. Some within his ranks were getting agitated. Calvin was becoming nervous there might be a storm brewing.

“Okay, Boss,” Tommy said. “I’ll put my phone in my pocket with the microphone up so you can hear everything.”

Calvin glanced in his rearview mirror.

Officer Sharansky was still there.

Calvin had intended to head straight toward his property, but he turned into the parking lot of a fast-food place. Wendy’s. He pulled into the drive-through.
