Chapter Fifteen

Ian had no worries. Felt like a feather as he skipped across the road to his room on the end. A bigger fleabag than even the piece of shit behind him. It had bigger rooms on either end. Two beds and a full kitchen.

He and his team could stay together. Mohammed always slept in a chair. That gave him a bed, and Shawna the other. He wished the arrangements could be a little different.

A thought he had been having lately. Shawna was coming out of her shell. Probably returning to the woman she had been before her terrible experience with … Miguel. Even thinking the man’s name made him sneer in disgust.

Having a job so personal. With such ramifications for defenseless children. It not only preyed on her emotions but his as well. Even Mohammed — a usually terse and seemingly unfeeling man — had become moody with the possible consequences of failure.

She was pulling closer to the confident woman she had been, and Ian’s eyes were opening up to the possibilities. Maybe take a break. Send Mohommed off with the physical copy of the evidence to accompany Gustoff and her bear as they found Mallory Black without getting killed by whoever was surely watching her too.

While he was gone … a fantasy he had trouble taking seriously. But maybe he could tell her how he felt. And she would feel the same way about him. And the rest would be whatever the rest could be.

He passed by the big truck Stan’s trained bear drove. He had been so hesitant to let anyone know where he was staying. Ian understood. He was just trying to keep his lady safe.

A lady he really only just met, but to each his own.

It was funny when he had discovered Ian already knew where he was. Parked at the same hotel at which he and his team stayed. Haggis had been near speechless when he found out Stan and company were right across the street the whole time.

Ian skipped up to his room. Knocked twice. Waited a count of two and knocked two more times. Unlocked the door and entered to find Shawna and Mohammed at the table. Wires trailing in every direction. The glow of their monitors making their faces float above their dark uniforms like ghostly spirits summoned by the candlelight of a séance.

They looked at him, but only Shawna smiled. Instead of looking away with a flush of embarrassment, she held his gaze until he smiled back.

That fantasy was becoming more real by the moment.

His phone buzzed. He pulled it out, sad that he couldn’t look at her smile anymore. Relieved that he wasn’t standing under her scrutiny anymore.

His GPS tracker sent him a notification. When he opened it, he saw the package he was expecting coming toward the door. He held his hand up and brought his phone to the door, watching the dot approach. Looked through the eyepiece of his door at the courier walking up from a yellow Penske van.
