The assassins weren’t crazy about the idea of Nico being transported in a separate vehicle, but they ultimately agreed since he held the purse strings.

Ian was also skeptical.

“This is something I need to check on by myself,” Nico said, but he wouldn’t meet Ian’s eyes.

“I don’t like it.”

“You don’t have to like it. Order me some tamales and a tequila with El Patron at the bar,” Nico said with a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “I’ll be there fifteen minutes after you.”

Before Ian could argue any more, Nico closed the door of the car Ian was in and waved it off. Once the other two vehicles were out of sight, Nico got into the SUV he’d rented and headed west, away from the airport.

He’d gone less than a mile when three men dressed in fatigues and holding assault rifles stepped into the road. Nico slowed and put his hands up above the steering wheel.

One of the men opened the door and held the gun to his back as they directed him to a beat-up truck on the shoulder of the road. They gestured for him to get in the truck bed and then climbed in after him.

One of the gunmen got in Nico’s rental car and followed. As they drove away, Nico saw another man waiting by another small truck. He was holding an assault rifle, as well.

The man made eye contact with him. The look on the man’s face was unsettling to Nico. He couldn’t help but feel it was a bad omen.
