The palace rose up out of the fog as if it were suspended in the clouds, hovering melancholically over the shadowy slope of the Sintra hills. The light stone facade, replete with sphinxes, winged creatures, and bizarre, frightening animals, all tied in knots or wrapped in acanthus leaves, was reminiscent of a fifteenth-century construction in all its Manueline Gothic magnificence, but with the gloomy, almost sinister touch of an evil fortress. Floating above the thick tufts of vapor that clung to the green of the hill, the palace stood proud in the gray refracted light of the misty afternoon. With its stone lacework of spires, pinnacles, battlements, towers, and turrets, it looked like a fantasy castle, a mysterious, haunted mansion, lost forever in time.

Sitting on a bench facing the garden, Thomas still didn't know what to think of the enigmatic palace. There were moments when Quinta da Regaleira looked so beautiful and otherworldly, but under the mantle of mist its beauty was somewhat frightening and dismal, a labyrinth of darkness and shadows.
