A FEW minutes before Billy was about to call in his lunch break, the radio demanded his attention. He thought of a few words he’d like to say in response to the call, but he was a cop, and someone probably needed his help. It’s why he did this job. The call was for a child caught shoplifting at a small corner store a few blocks from where he was.

The whole incident took about twenty minutes. When he got to the sandwich shop, Cal was already there, a bottle of Barq’s root beer in front of him. Billy caught his eye as soon as he walked in, and the look on Cal’s face told him he wasn’t angry at him for being late.

“Sorry for being late.” He took the seat across the small table. “A seven-year-old decided to shoplift a Snickers. Had to get that all straightened out and talk to his mother. Have you ordered yet? If not I can recommend a few things.”

“Perused the menu but thought I’d wait for you before I ordered.” He leaned closer to Billy. “I don’t usually get to have lunch with a hot guy in uniform. I wish we were alone because I’d start with your hat and remove each piece of clothing very slowly, one at a time. Then I’d take your handcuffs and …”

“Stop!” Billy hissed through his teeth. “Not fair, babe. So not fair. I only have a half hour for lunch.”

“Too bad.”

Just then their server came over and took their orders.

“Cal, can I ask why you didn’t want to have lunch with the other guys? You’re the one who’s more comfortable being out to everyone.”

“I don’t want to share you just yet. Do you mind?”

“No, I don’t mind. I don’t have too many people to share you with right now anyway. You know how it is at work for me. Besides, it’s kinda nice, just the two of us, whatever the reason. The lieutenant said Roy had mentioned seeing us walking around, holding hands. He recognized you from the sidewalk that first night. At least he didn’t announce it in morning report. He wouldn’t do that to me.”

Cal hesitated before speaking again. “So your lieutenant knows you’re gay? He’s okay with it?”

“Oh sure. His name’s Joe Temple. He was the older guy at the café with us that first night. I’m afraid I made my interest in you known to him then. He caught me staring. He’s cool. Roy and the other officer with us that night know. I’m sure a few other guys at least suspect. I never announced it, but they’ve never seen me dating a woman, or anyone, for that matter.”

Their sandwiches were served, and they took a few minutes to eat.

“I called my mom this morning,” Cal said after he took a drink of his Barq’s. “She said to tell you hi. Actually her words were ‘Tell your young man hi for me.’” Cal seemed to hesitate, but when Billy smiled, he continued. “I told her what you said.
