Chapter Seven
“Alex!”
His eyes swept down and up again, but the flash of desire was replaced almost at once by anger. “Don’t you have more sense than to open the door without finding out who’s on the other side first?”
Painfully aware that she was wearing nothing but a towel, Kendra backed away. Closing the door behind him and locking it, Alex followed her into the room, but when he turned to look at her, his face was carefully blank. “Put your clothes back on,” he ordered. “We need to talk.”
Kendra fled into the bathroom to dress in the only clothes she had, the wool skirt and sweater she’d put on for her day in the city. In her hurry, she ignored the stretched-out panty hose. The room was warm enough for bare feet and legs. It felt too warm, now that Alex had come into it.
With a deep breath to give her strength, she faced him. “Why did you come back?”
“There are too many unanswered questions. As long as they stay that way, you’re at risk. Damn it, Kendra, what is it you haven’t told me?”
That I love you, she thought. That your son is one of them, whoever they are. Aloud she insisted, “Nothing that has anything to do with this.”
“Not good enough.”
“It will have to be. That’s all I have to give you.”
A dangerous light came into his molasses-brown eyes and he took a step closer. “Is it?”
Her heart gave a nervous lurch and her breath stopped. As quickly as it had been issued, the sexual invitation was retracted and controlled. He might be out of uniform, but Alex could wrap his profession around him like a cloak when he chose. He was choosing now and, infuriated by the barrier he was building between them, Kendra lashed out.
“Stop playing cops and robbers with me! Either you believe me or you don’t. We agreed there’s no killer lurking in the shadows, so why did you really come back?”
“I couldn’t leave.” The words seemed wrenched out of him, but she believed them. She felt the same inevitability about their relationship. It was futile to fight mutual desire this powerful. It was almost criminal even to try.
Kendra’s face changed, softening, until he could read all she felt in her eyes. She was glad he’d come. She wanted him to stay.
“I keep giving you a rough time. I’m sorry, Kendra.”
“More than you know.” She moved closer, the damp tendrils of hair dancing around her exquisite face. Her pupils were enormous, wide and black. “I’ve thought about you far too much ever since we first . . . met.”
The longing in her voice matched that in his heart. With no more hesitation he moved across the small room and pulled her into his arms. “You’ve become an obsession with me, Kendra,” he murmured into her hair. She smelled of flowery shampoo and soap. “I didn’t even reach the car before I knew I had to stay here tonight.”
“What took you so long to come back?”
She felt his smile against her forehead.
