Chapter Seven

“Is everything okay?” Lori asked as Henry shut the office door behind them. For a moment, she thought he might have discovered why she’d really come to Holiday Falls, that he’d realized the threat of closure hung over his store.

“Yes. It’s just…after last night, I didn’t think I was going to see you again. We both knew what happened was a one-off thing, and that you were going back to Cambridge. Then, when you turned up here for the reading, I…” Henry ran a hand through his unruly curls. “Well, I started having some thoughts about you that I guess you’d say aren’t appropriate for the workplace.”

“What kind of thoughts?” Lori set down her bags and moved to stand a little closer to Henry.

I shouldn’t be doing this. I should walk out of the office and go back to the inn. But being here, learning how he feels about me, seems right. Because I think I feel the same way about him.

“I realized again how gorgeous you are. And how much I wanted to do this…”

He kissed her. Barely more than a brush of his lips against hers, it still had the power to ignite her desires.

Lori gazed up at him. His curls hung in wild disarray around his face, and his eyes were dark behind the lenses of his glasses. “Is this a good idea?” she asked.

“Probably not, but something about being with you makes me want to live dangerously. To take risks and see if it gets me what I want.”

Henry pulled her coat off her shoulders, and she let it drop to the floor. He pushed her up against the wall and kissed her again, harder this time. She threw her arms around his neck and surrendered to his caresses, not caring that there was a store full of customers on the other side of the office door. The bad weather might have forced her to stay in Holiday Falls longer than she wished, but it had also given her another chance to be with Henry, to lose herself in the taste of his mouth and the feel of his lean, firm body. Whatever he wanted to do with her, she wouldn’t say no, and she promised herself she would walk away from him afterward without regrets.

“I shouldn’t really be admitting this,” he said as they finally broke the kiss, “but I’ve always had a fantasy about having sex on this desk. I suppose it’s the thought of getting up to something so intimate while people are going about their business in the store, with no idea of what’s happening in here.”

“And would you ever…?”

“I didn’t think so. Not until now.”

She glanced over at the haphazard mounds of paperwork on his desk. “Well, I guess it wouldn’t screw up your filing system too much.”

He laughed, then fixed her with another long, assessing gaze that seemed to strip her bare. “So, what are your fantasies, Lori?”
