Chapter Nineteen

As I got back to my room, I realized that my adrenaline was still pumping. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw those men outside the house. I smelled the smoke from their torches. I heard the venom in their voices.

I shivered as I leaned against my door a minute. There were no guarantees that they wouldn’t come back tonight. Men like that weren’t men of their word, always holding up their side of the bargain. They could very well be determined to teach us a lesson either way.

What exactly had we done that made them feel so threatened? Was it because I talked to Hillary earlier? Had they found out about it, and had that been the tipping point?

Who was the ringleader of the bunch? Police Chief Cruiser? Big Frankie? The man on the motorcycle?

Motorcycle Man still had me curious. He appeared to be watching us, and I couldn’t figure out why. If I were honest, part of me was tempted to just flee this place. To get out while we could before we got in any deeper.

But running away wasn’t in my DNA. I needed to find answers, and I had no time to waste.

Maybe, in a way, I was like Helene. I didn’t like for people to bully me and tell me what to do. I never had and I never would. In fact, in some ways, having those men show up here tonight made me want to fight even harder.

I picked up my phone. I really did need to call Riley. With everything that had happened today, I hadn’t had a chance to talk to him yet.

Besides, the announcement to all of the Grayson Tech employees was supposed to take place today. I didn’t want Riley to find out from anyone other than me. I didn’t think he had connections with anybody else at the company, but I shouldn’t chance it.

Just then, my phone rang. I looked at the screen and saw it was my friend Lt. Daniel Yoder from Harrisburg. Maybe he had an update for me.

I answered, happy to delay the inevitable for a few more minutes. “Hey, Daniel. What’s going on?”

“I am sorry to be calling so late,” he started. “But there was something I thought you would want to know. I couldn’t wait until the morning.”

I straightened, more anxious than ever to hear what he had to share with me.
