Chapter 19
Before I settled down next to Sarah, I retrieved the water and the sandwiches. I took a swig and hoped I wouldnât have to pee anytime soon because I wasnât doing it in front of the cat. There was something in his eyes that was unnerving.
I tried to sit more in front of Sarah, that way in case I fell asleep and she moved I would wake up. Even though I tried to not visit dreamland, I did.
I dreamed of panthers, of a woman and a man. They were a couple, a king and queen, with crowns on their heads. Panthers surrounded them as if they were their guards. Their coats black as night, teeth white as the snow. Growls filled my head, reverberating through my body.
I wasnât afraid of them. I wanted to be closer.
As if I was there, I stepped forward. Closer I moved until one panther stepped forward. Hunkering down, he came within reach. The light of the candles, slid across his coat showing a faint detail like printed silk. His eyes were a bright blue like an autumn sky. I stared into his eyes. They were calm and exhilarating. Reaching out, I wanted to touch him, to feel if his coat was as soft as it seemed to be. However, when my fingers were about to make contact, he crouched, letting out a roar that caused me to jerk back.
I sat up. My skin dripped with perspiration. The beat of my heart thumped so hard I thought I would pass out. I brushed my hair back out of my face and pulled my hair back up into a ponytail. I looked up to see two boys sitting with a panther and I was the center of their attention.
Sarah stirred. Her eyes worked around the cave then she sat up. âI hoped I was dreaming.â
I sighed then muttered, âYou and me both.â
When her eyes took in the panther, they widened. âOh gosh.â
âYeah.â I wasnât ready to tell her I thought they were all shifters.
As I sat there, sipping my water, I replayed the dream in my head. It was strange. In a way, it was as if I knew them, trusted them, but I didnât know why. How could I feel that way? I didnât know anyone who was royalty. I laughed at myself for thinking the queen and king were the weirdest things in my dream. It still made me wonder why was I dreaming about them now?
âChris,â Sarah whispered, as she hugged her knees to her body. âI have to pee.â
Iâd hoped we wouldâve been out of this before weâd thought about the bathroom. Unfortunately, when she told me, my own bladder reacted. âMe too.â
I stood and looked around the cave. There was no bathroom to be seen so I figured they would let us go outside. âHey,â I called. âWe need to use the bathroom.â I felt stupid for asking but what else was I supposed to say. We need to use the bushes.
