HELLEN According to the Greek poet Hesiod as well as the historians Thucydides and Diodorus Siculus, Hellen was a son of Deucalion and Pyrrha, the sole survivors of the great flood that Zeus sent to wipe out the human race, which he considered utterly wicked. Other sources name Hellen’s father as the god Zeus himself. Hellen was considered to be the ancestor of all the Greeks, who were called “Hellenes” after Hellen. The tribes of Greece were said to be descended from his sons and grandsons: Dorus (after whom the Dorians were named), Ion (after whom the Ionians were named), Achaeus (after whom the Achaeans were named) and Aeolus (after whom the Aeolians were named).
