Chapter 22

The black Neon sped through the highway overtaking the few cars that were occupying the dark road. Alec quickly phoned in his sergeant to give him the news.

“I found the killer!”

“Where?!” The sergeant’s voice sounded hopeful, “Did you make the arrest?!”

“No,” Alec zipped by a blue SUV, “He’s going to kill my dad.”

“Does this guy have a death wish?!” The sergeant knew about the Don’s connection to the detective, but always avoided talking about it in respect for them. He knew Alec wasn’t like his dad and the way he carried himself through his work showed it constantly. Sergeant Garrett and Don Santino were two sides of Alec’s coin. They both looked out for his best interest even if their approach to the law was different.

“I don’t know,” Alec said, “But for sure he killed Woodley and he needs to pay for that!”

“Did he confess to you?”

“He didn’t have to!” Alec wanted this guy to get the book thrown at him as hard as was metaphorically possible, “I’m going for the arrest, but don’t send backup.”

“Are you insane?” Garrett protested.

“You gotta trust me on this, Sarge.” Alec couldn’t explain the details, but he hoped he followed through.

“I’ll try to give you as big a window that I can but after that,” Garrett warned, “I’m gonna send in the big guns.”

“Understood.” Alec hung up and tossed the phone on the passenger seat while he stayed focused on the highway. The road to reach his father’s compound was a tight, hard-to-reach turn that even the veterans of the Santino family kept missing. The shrubs covered the view of the path, but once you got in and followed the few miles of empty dirt road, you were greeted by a large gate that opened to the Santino compound.

“Hope I’m not too late.”
