CHAPTER EIGHT

NIKOS OPENED THE throttle of the sleek motorboat and it thrust forward with a powerful roar of the outboard engine. He gave a laugh—a carefree sound. He couldn’t even remember the last time he’d taken a motorboat out like this, and certainly not here at the Villa Drakis, where he hadn’t been for years.

He felt himself frown. Had his life really been restricted to endless business trips abroad to do endless deals to make ever more money for the Drakis coffers? Only snatching brief time off to spend a weekend every now and then with the likes of sophisticated females like Irinia, wining and dining them in Michelin-starred restaurants in snatches before flying off yet again, or heading back to Athens to report to his father, set up yet another potential money-making deal, and then be off again?

He shook his mind free of such thoughts, focussing on the here and now—on what was now essential to him: putting everything else about his life totally aside and focussing on the woman who was so totally unlike all the Irinias of this world—who was changing everything in his life.

Changing it for ever.

And I have to get it right! Far too much is at stake.

And surely now, after his initial near-catastrophic miscalculation, he was beginning to do so? Though it was slow going with Alys, she was finally progressing beyond mere nods and monosyllables. He was on the right track with her. Yesterday had been good—today would be better.

Bringing her here to the villa had been exactly the right thing to do. Slowly, but inexorably, she was responding to his new treatment of her, letting go of the hostility that his previous harshness had engendered.

And it must not come back. That’s essential!

It was more than essential.

Because I don’t want to feel hostile to her either.

He heard an echo of his words to her over dinner last night. ‘You look radiant.’

He turned to look at Alys now, sitting by the gunwale, her hair streaming like a flag in the wind, her face in profile lifted to the sun and the wind. How beautiful she was...

He dragged his gaze back to the sea. They were heading parallel to the rocky shoreline of the promontory, and before long had cleared it to starboard and made a wide, circling manoeuvre out to sea.

He pointed to the rounded tip of the promontory, turning to Alys from the wheel. ‘Can you see? Right at the very tip there’s a cove, a sandy beach. You can only reach it by sea. That’s where we’re heading.’

He steered towards it, reducing speed as the water became shallower and calmer, became turquoise. Moments later he was cutting the engine, lifting the motor out of the water, dropping anchor.

‘Time for our picnic,’ he said. He knew his voice was cheerful, enthusiastic, still infused with the sense of being carefree that had come over him as he’d let rip with the motorboat.

He hefted up the wicker picnic basket and chill box and jumped
