CHAPTER SEVEN

THE PUNCH OF thrill that sent her into the bedroom faded to nerves once she was there. Why was he making her wait for him? Left alone, her head began filling with tumbling second thoughts and hurry-up anticipation. Not knowing what he intended to do to her was excruciating.

She had been thinking about their first night for six months, yearning to repeat it. On that night, he had seduced her slowly with small gestures that she could have easily rebuffed if she hadn’t been into it. A light caress on her wrist, a slip of her hair over her ear, a kiss on the boardwalk. She’d been more than a willing participant by then, moaning when he’d kissed her neck in the elevator. She had been weak with want.

Since then, she had longed to be swept away again. For possibility to become probability, then reality.

This was different. It was happening, yet it wasn’t. She had no doubt she could back out, no hard feelings, but she wasn’t so much afraid of what was about to happen as jittery at the uncertainty of not knowing. She had never role-played a fantasy. In that respect, she did feel like a virgin. Would she do it right? Would she like it? Would he?

He had grasped onto his part with such brutal ease, she was daunted. She knew the point was to commit to the role and play it out to its conclusion. She wanted that, but it meant giving up control to him. Letting him guide and take the lead and have his way.

Another shiver of dread-filled anticipation went through her, followed by a rush of incendiary heat.

The door clicked and he entered. His shoes were gone. His tie still hung loosely around his neck. He made a point of closing the door with a firm click, then stood with his arms folded, shoulders straining the fabric of his shirt, weight balanced evenly between his braced feet. He was a potent man intent on ravishing her and her knees nearly buckled in capitulation.

He sauntered toward her, pulling his loosened tie over his head as he closed in.

“Cross your wrists.”

“Are you serious?” she gasped, tucking her fists beneath her neck.

“It’s only to remind you who you belong to.” He met her gaze as he took hold of her wrist, slowly drawing it down, watching closely and giving her plenty of time to refuse.

Her heart was crashing around in her chest, but he was watching to make sure she was with him, exactly as he had the first time. It was weirdly reassuring.

In a small daze, she let her other arm come down and crossed it over the first. He wound the loop of silk around her wrists and gave it a tug.

She wriggled slightly. It was snug, but she could pull herself free if she really wanted to. At the same time, the small constraint seemed to tug her deeper into the game they were playing. She threw her head back to glare at him.
