CHAPTER 8

IT WAS HARD TO GET OUT OF BED SUNDAY MORNING. My body was exhausted and my tummy cramped. I lay on my side for several minutes before easing my legs over the side and scooting out of bed to find something decent to wear. I chose one of the double breasted suits mama gave me the last time I was home. It was tangerine colored with a long flowing skirt. Mama said it looked better on me since I was about five inches taller and had long legs. The long jacket and skirt practically swallowed up her 5’3” frame. I tugged and twisted at the skirt. A few months ago it had been loose in the hips, but now I could see a faint panty line. No matter, the jacket covered most of my butt. I pulled on the long sleeved jacket and fastened the three large buttons down the front. Keeping my hair in a short bob cut was the best think I’d ever done. A few swipes of the flat iron to swoop my bangs and little comb through in the back was all it took.

Pastor picked me up outside the campus gate right on time 10:00 am just like he’d said the day before. This morning he was jovial like nothing had happened the day before. “Good morning and how are you this fine day?” He didn’t even wait for me to answer. I had no intentions of speaking to him anyway. Maybe he knew that.

I was really starting to think he had a split personality too. He sang and hummed as he drove. Hezekiah Walker and the Fellowship Choir sang, “Oh Lord We Praise You” he really got loud.

A mile or so before we reached the church he turned down the radio. “Listen, I was out of line yesterday. I shouldn’t have yelled at you. I really am sorry.”

The Christian in me wanted to accept his apology, but the scorned women in me was still mad as hell. Just hearing his voice was making my blood boil all over again.

“It’s okay if you don’t want to talk. I know you’re angry. This is a difficult situation.”

What an arrogance SOB, I thought as I turned and watched the cars passed on the opposite side of the winding country road. God I wished I was riding in one of them.

He kept talking. “It’s for the best you know. That no one knows the baby is mine. I’m glad you thought of that. It would be too messy for both of us.”

I shot him a, you’re freaking nuts, stare. If my eyes had been flames they would have burned a hole through his thick skull.

He continued. “We’ll figure out how to handle this. I promise.” He reached over and caressed the top of my hand with the tips of his fingers.

I jerked away. The muscles in my face tightened. “Oh, it’s going to be handled alright.” I mumbled.

“What did you say?” He asked keeping his eyes on the traffic ahead.
