Time to Reflect

“If you experience a lack of community, it may mean that you are called upon to build one.” —Sherri Mandell

What are you feeling nudged or called to build?

Perhaps you used to help coach your daughter’s gymnastics or volleyball team and are frustrated that you do not have the same physical energy to do so at the moment. But maybe you are a great photographer, and instead of coaching, you can sit in the bleachers and take photos that create memories those children can hold onto for a lifetime. Or you might have been a teacher before you became ill, and you miss the joy of explaining something to someone and seeing them grasp a difficult concept for the first time. With technology today, you can literally video record a course or tutor from the privacy of your own home—in your own time frame. Maybe you enjoy writing and want to think creatively about posting work online or have a goal to write a book. Our gifts and talents didn’t run for the hills when we were diagnosed with an illness or experienced a trauma. We sometimes just forget—in the flurry of uncertainty—that we need to look at them with fresh eyes as we adapt to our new situation.

With long silences, lengthy prayers, adaptation, and attention to the circumstances of my life and the gifts and places in me that ran deeper than illness, I began to see how God had something different planned for me. And that this plan was going to be different from everyone else’s plan on the planet.

The same goes for you.

The gifts you have and how you use and live into them will look different from the plans you may have had and the lives other people live. Let’s face it, we live in a society that tends to get judgy when things “look different.” But getting caught up in the opinions and judgment of others just takes us away from what our purpose looks like. When we discover that plan, we understand what purpose God has for us—and whatever it “looks” like to other people doesn’t matter. They don’t get a say in our master plan when they weren’t involved in creating the blueprints.
