That night, I crossed the line again. This time, when my feet hit the wooden floor, I did not collapse at the feeling of being near Jiraiya. The man did appear shocked and moved his mouth to speak but stopped himself at the last moment. Perhaps, he felt the connection, even as a human.
“I never did thank you,” I said as an excuse. I wanted to see him again. I just wanted to be close to him. The pain in my chest vanished at the small smile that appeared for a single moment on Jiraiya’s face. Would it be too much to hope that he felt the pull of our souls wanting to connect?
Jiraiya stuffed his hands into his own jacket pockets as he shifted on his feet. I wondered if he was nervous. “I never expected you to.”
There were many ways that I could take that comment. I decided to just shrug at him and wait to see if there was more on the human’s mind. The fact that I had willing crossed the line again and was standing in front of a man that vowed to kill my kind and myself for doing just that had not left my thoughts completely. The need to see him had just been more important.
“How’s your head?”
The comment made me laugh. I knew that he meant the injury, but with my inner thoughts going crazy, it seemed to fit me very well. I was not sure how my head was. I might have been going crazy and wouldn’t know.
“Well, I am standing on your side, again, facing an armed man. I might still need some rest.” The small amount of truth and Jiraiya’s laugh relaxed my tense stance a little. The man moved slowly toward me and I tried not to move. I did not want to scare away the man or do something beyond stupid.
Jiraiya raised his hand and slid his fingers through my hair. His gentle movements and his warmth had my body almost vibrating. “Everything seems to be healed. Maybe you have some inner brain issues or just the luck of a god.”
Luck―that was a way to look at it. The idea that he thought it was lucky that I had crossed or my idea that he thought that made me lock eyes onto his. The man had insanely bright gray eyes and there was a warmth to them, a warmth that I wanted to be in. Before I could think too much, my feet moved forward and I threw my arms around the man’s neck.
The jolt backward from Jiraiya did little to stop me as I kissed him. The man’s lips were pressed tightly together and seemed to be chapped from the cold weather. I tightened my grip and closed my eyes. I finally felt warm and my head cleared. I would leave this for him to decide. I was content here.
