"I… I’m on my way to collect my own bride. Her name is Grace, and she arrives on the very next train." Tom answered, biting back the questions running through his head.
“Oh,” she answered lamely. “I see. Congratulations are in order, then.”
“Yes, I suppose they are. Now, can I offer you a ride? If you’re going to town, that is…”
“I am, and a ride would be lovely.”
"Hop up, then," he answered agreeably. He offered a hand down to Rosemary and noted with a pang the look of quiet sadness on her face. Beneath that he thought he might even detect fear and he knew that he would not be able to keep silent on the matter for long. It simply wasn’t in his nature. When he could stand the uneasy silence between the two of them no longer, he opened his mouth to speak.
“Rosemary,” he started, clearing his throat reflexively. “I probably shouldn't ask this, but why is it that you’re leaving?”
"He's unhappy with me," she answered at once, her voice stiff and full of pain that twisted Tom’s heart. "He's unhappy with me and I can't stay in a place where I'm not wanted. It wouldn't even be fair for me to do so."
Rosemary’s fists clenched in her lap as the silence passed between them.
“Ben?” Tom asked in surprise, “You think Ben’s unhappy with you? But why?”
"Because," she answered miserably. "I overheard your conversation in the barn. I didn't mean to, honestly, I didn't. I'd come with a tray of tea, thinking you all might be thirsty, when I heard him explaining his dissatisfaction with me. I've failed him. I know that now.
“Begging your pardon, and not trying to be disagreeable at all, but you’ve completely misunderstood. That’s not what Ben was saying at all.”
"Isn't it?" Rosemary’s eyes were bright with tears as she looked stoically at the town they had just entered.
"Well, no, it isn't. The train station is just around this next bend, and if you want to go I won't try and stop you, but you must've come in on the conversation at the wrong place because that wasn't what Ben meant to say. He's worried about you, to be sure, but because he cares for you, he wants you to be happy here. Not because he doesn't want you around. Just something to think on, all right?"
Tom was shocked by her words, what sounded like an admission of something she had long suspected and kept bottled up inside. As they drew ever closer to the train station, he did his best to reassure her, both for Ben’s sake and for his own selfish comfort.
Tom liked Rosemary. He liked her quiet ways and what her union with Ben represented for the possibilities of his own life with Grace. If pressed, he had to admit that he had never paid close enough attention to her to see how much she was struggling, but he had assumed that she and Ben were getting on just fine. To learn
