I hit the gas and the G-Wagon’s tires grip the snow, sending me off into the night and putting Cora’s house in the rearview.

The way things went down with Wayne was beyond fucked up. I need to make it right, but just not now. I need to give him time to process this, to cool down, to let his wife Noelle settle him down like she’s good at doing.

But it never should have come to this. I should have done it the right way. Should have gone to him first and asked for his permission, even though if I knew he wouldn’t give it to me I should have proceeded anyway. It’s just that after needing Cora for so long there wasn’t really time to plan, to set out a roadmap. That’s not how relationships work, not how human life works.

And most people have a plan as it is, but then life interrupts that. Or as the old expression goes, everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face. Truer words were never spoken, and that’s how we all feel right now.

The only plan I need right now is one to rectify the situation. Wayne will need time. I know that and I have to give it to him. But Cora? I need to get in touch with her, let her know she’s not alone. I bet Wayne will delete my number from her contacts list tomorrow if he hasn’t already. It doesn’t matter. I’m in love with her and I’m going to be there for her, especially on Christmas Day.

I stare at the empty road in front of me and then remember the whole reason she was drinking in the first place. She lost her scholarship thanks to that damn professor.

My eyes narrow and I nod to myself. If her dad needs proof that I’ll do anything for her, I’ll show him. And I know just the thing. Because as much as she means to me and I mean to her, the most important thing right now is what she’s been working her tail off for all her life. Her education.

And she will get that diploma. I’m going to make sure of it.

Wayne can try and keep me away from her, but he can’t stop me from helping her. Which will help him see just how real this is in the first place. Show don’t tell, right?

I’ll show him she’s everything to me, and in the process show the world what happens to guys who take advantage of their authority positions, especially over kids and women. Those are the worst kind of people there are.

And in handling him, I’m going to show her dad that I’m the best man for his daughter. Whether he realizes it right now or not.

He won’t have a choice.
