Chapter Two

The last week before Christmas was always crazy, but this year had taken the cake. On the first test flight, the sleigh had gotten airborne and then sputtered and fallen to the ground, dragging all eight reindeer down with it.

Bane had worked around the clock for days until he’d gotten it airborne again, and then had tested, retested, and tested once again. It wouldn’t do for the sleigh to stop working during Santa’s gift run. They had one night and one night only to do this; it had to be right the first time.

Now the sleigh was loaded down with all the gifts, the reindeer were ready and he was pretty sure everything was going to go off without a hitch. And Joey thought being chief doll designer was stressful.

The big guy elbowed Bane in the ribs, beard blowing in the frigid wind that was beginning to kick up. “Believe, Bane.”

He grinned at the Boss and nodded. “Yes, sir. I do. I fixed it, and it runs just fine.”

He was given a wink as Santa pulled his hat down over his riot of white hair, and the big guy headed for the sleigh, a last bag of gifts over his shoulder.

Bane stayed where he was, tool belt heavy around his waist as he waited for Santa to take off. The sleigh started and got airborne, that special magic hanging in the air with it, and a cheer went up among the assembled elves, Bane included.

Everyone dispersed, on holiday now, but Bane stayed there, watching until the sleigh disappeared. Making sure. Relief went through him as the little blip that was the sleigh disappeared off the horizon. Present delivery was as good as a done deal.

Grinning, he turned and headed for his little house at the far end of Santa’s village. Unless he missed his mark, Joey should already be there.

“Bane, dude! Are you coming to celebrate?” Hank and Billy were already carrying mugs with hot buttered rum, leaning together, and the sound of Christmas carols spilled out of the factory along with bright lights.

“I got a celebration of my own going on at home. But you guys have fun.”

His own personal Christmas Joey had been off work for a couple of hours now. He walked a little faster, anticipation perking his prick right up. The scent of roast beef hit his nose before he even got to the door, spicy and rich and definitely not sweet.

He licked his lips as he opened the door and breathed in deep. “I’m ho-ho-ho-home.”

“That’s bad.” Joey was pouring wine, wearing nothing but one of Bane’s old, heavy sweaters.

“Does that mean I’m on the naughty list?” He admired Joey’s legs.

“You’re always on the naughty list.” Joey winked. “Everything went off okay?”

“Yeah. The sleigh went up, up and away, packed with presents. We’re off the clock until spring.” He took his tool belt off and hung it on the hooks by the door.

“I’m going to spend days making jam and skiing and sleeping in.”

“You’ve got the sleeping in part right.
