Klutz

“You’re tired?” Stacy asked, whisking her around in the waltz. Melanie was covering up a yawn. The party had been going on for hours, and yet it was just getting started for the majority of the president’s friends. Probably because the president had yet to make an appearance. She wondered if he was going to want to dance too.

“Yes. Exhausted. But this is fun. Prom not so much. So, I’m soaking it up until, as Edvard says, I turn into a pumpkin.” She shouldn’t be tired. It was only eight or so at home, but Melanie was always up early. A swim and then out into the Rockies to find trees worthy of a home. Plus, she’d been on her feet all evening and hadn’t eaten.

They finished that dance. Stacy was a very skilled dancer. Melanie really was enjoying herself. Stacy was more skilled than Edvard, Melanie thought. Grace defined him, whereas Edvard was flash. Melanie couldn’t help comparing them. Who was the more skilled? And who did she like dancing with more? They were both fun, in their own ways.

Melanie finally settled on Stacy. He didn’t make her dizzy, about to pass out and get sick on her shoes. That was a definite plus.

Near the end of that dance, there was a chill breeze and the sound of sleigh bells. “I’ve a surprise for you,” Stacy said.

The crowed parted. Melanie thought it might be the president coming to claim a dance. He’d avoided her all night. And now when she was about to drop, he came. But if it was the president, then why did Stacy have the funniest expression ever?

Over the heads of everyone, Melanie saw tinsel and ribbons floating in thin air. What in the world? Then the crowd parted before her. It took Melanie a second to focus on the bedecked deer. Christmas ribbons flowed every which way and sweet tinkling silver bells sounded with every step and sway. The four female elves that he’d been entrusted to were so proud of themselves. Their smiles were so big, outshining Belfast’s coat, which they had brushed into a brilliant sheen.

“You promised him a dance too,” Stacy said, and gave Melanie a polite shove forward. The elves parted like geese and let her through. She touched his nose, trying to find the deer underneath his headdress.

“I feel like a neon sign,” Belfast said by way of greetings.

“No. You look… Nice.” Melanie told him. Her laughter matched his chagrin.

“I’m a circus clown.”

Melanie didn’t get a chance to tell him how cute he looked, because just then there was a squeak through the PA system. Everyone looked to the platform where the musicians sat.

“Ladies and gentleman, the president of the United States.” Endless applause, and Melanie saw the president take the stage. When he spoke, he started by telling jokes, which got polite laughs. He went on, telling everyone about President Washington’s escapade on Christmas Eve. It was fitting, Melanie thought. It was a rousing tribute to the first president, but then he surprised her.
