Morgan liked life in their snow globe. It was quiet and peaceful and just what she needed before the Cake-Off Competition began. I’m sorry I yelled at you, God. This is perfect, she thought as she held on to Knox’s waist while he guided the snowmobile around his log home and into the woods nearby.

Knox had left Puck at the house, afraid the dog might wander off after an animal or that his paws would sustain frostbite from exposure if he were out too long.

Morgan pressed her face into Knox’s back as they sped along the snow, knowing Emma would approve of Knox’s care of Puck and how Knox had put his animal’s safety above the dog’s whining desire to come with them. Knox had petted the dog’s massive head and promised a walk later as a reward.

They rounded the top of an incline, and Knox cut the engine. It took her a moment to realize why, but when she turned her head, she gasped at the sight spread out below them. The mountain valley wore a blanket of pure, pristine white with a gorgeous little red church in the distance, surrounded by towering evergreens standing guard. “Oh. Oh, it’s beautiful.”

“My grandparents were married in that church,” Knox said. “Long, long time ago.”

The peace and serenity of the location overwhelmed her, and she lifted her face to the sky and closed her eyes, letting the snow land on her cheeks, nose, and lips.

“You like it here.”

She opened her eyes and focused on Knox. “I wish I’d brought my phone so I could take pictures. Capture the quiet and simplicity. I needed this,” she told him. “I needed to be reminded of what’s important and… that there are gentlemen left in the world who value their families and aren’t jerks to all women just because they can be,” she added softly. “Thank you for bringing me here. For showing me this and… sharing it with me.”

He twisted a bit more on the seat and placed his hand behind her, leaning into her. Morgan didn’t hesitate but met his kiss with her own, unable to deny Knox anything when he’d given her so much in such a short amount of time.

Their cold noses warmed against each other’s cheeks as they kissed in the snowfall until Knox pulled away, nuzzling his lips against hers.

“Ready to keep going?”

Her lips tingled and her body temp had shot up a good twenty degrees at his touch. “I can’t wait to see more.”

Knox showed her his favorite spots, the last being the resort atop the mountain, which she couldn’t make out due to the blowing snow. “I thought you said it was twelve miles away?”

“It is by road. By snowmobile, it’s a lot closer, though a hard, uphill ride. But on a clear day, you can see it from here.”

Even though she couldn’t see it, the thought of the resort and the competition left her feeling a bit ill and uneasy. If she screwed up, if she failed… The thought nearly sent her into a panic attack.
