CHAPTER 5: FOR WHAT ITS WORTH

I throw the phone back in my bag, and stride towards the cab rank. I never want to see Chris again. I can’t. It has to be finished.

It’s for the best, I tell myself. I’m bad news. Chris will be better off without me.

I’m not worthy of him.

I become aware of a car rolling along on the road beside where I’m walking, its heavy engine purring just behind me. I blink back tears, knowing what I’ll see when I look behind. Sure enough, it’s a black Bentley sliding along the curb at my side.

Chris rolls the passenger window down, and leans over towards me. 'Hey,' he says cheerily, 'Where are you going? I'm giving you a lift home, remember?'

'I can't,' I mumble.

'Come on, get in, Leesh. Let me take you home.'

'No,' I shake my head. 'No. Thank you. Tell Hawk I'll sign his papers. I accept his deal.’

From the corner of my eye, I see Chris’s face crumple, confusion and hurt dancing across his features. He can’t follow me much further – I’m almost at the taxi rank now, and if he keeps going, he’s going to run into the back of an idling cab. 'Leesh, please. Tell me what happened. Let me know you're okay. Please.'

His voice is so plaintive that I falter, and stop dead.

Chris slams on the breaks, stopping right next to me. 'Just let me drive you home. That's all I ask.'

I look towards the taxis. They’re right there – another ten steps. I could so easily cross that distance, hop inside one, and write this complication out of my life forever. I consider it, but then I remember what I’ve learned about complications over the years. In life, you have to face your complications or they become your demons. I owe Chris at least a proper goodbye.

I open the door of the Bentley and slide into the front seat. 'Okay.' I say. 'Just get me home. And get me there quickly.'

Chris doesn't move the car. He turns to look at me, his ocean blue eyes wide and filled with concern. I stare down at my hands, still trembling in my lap. I can't look at him. If I do, I'll burst into tears again and I don't want him to see me like this. I don't want to be so weak.

'What happened Alicia?' His voice is soothing and sweet.

I long to pour my heart out to him, to tell him everything. Not just the whole story about how I killed Barney, but everything. My fears about how I’ll never be good enough – not for him, not for any man. How I’m sure I deserve the life that I have, a life with no future, and no aspirations. How I’m afraid I’m going to spend the rest of my days as a second-rate mistress until my looks fade and no one wants me. How I’m never going to be ‘respectable’. And I’ll never be loved in a way that I can reciprocate.
