Chapter 12

Why Are So Many Doctors Clueless about Cholesterol?

“When we learned that cholesterol was there in the arteries, treating it became the standard of care. And the drug companies very quickly swooped in to influence the science in this field. They didn’t do it by bribing doctors … it was much more sophisticated than that. I can remember a time when they got me to give a talk, they made me an opinion maker, they funded my research, they got their people on FDA panels, and they were part of creating the National Cholesterol Education Program. So as standards of care came in, if you came into my office with elevated cholesterol and I did not treat you with a statin drug, then my treatment was considered below the standard of care. So physicians today basically have no choice but to recommend treatment with statin medications for anyone with elevated cholesterol.”

– Dr. Dwight Lundell

Becoming a doctor is a hard road; it takes years of education and a big financial investment. But the rewards can be great, and what could be nobler than devoting your life to healing people from disease? Let me say it again: I have the greatest respect for the nurses, doctors, naturopaths, dietitians, chiropractors, and other healthcare professionals who make this sacrificial commitment to the betterment of others. They deserve our utmost respect and gratitude.

That said, I am troubled by how little most traditionally trained medical doctors are taught about the nutritional component of health. Sadly, much of what they learn is based on the theories pushed by Ancel Keys (whom we discussed earlier) and George McGovern; he was the politician responsible for getting the government involved in making standardized national dietary recommendations decades ago. But what about all the twenty-first-century research that disputes Keys’s rather shifty science? Apart from the experts quoted in this book, the mainstream medical community seems determined to stick with outdated and potentially dangerous ideas. That’s truly baffling to me. Isn’t part of the Hippocratic oath to “first do no harm”?
