CHAPTER SEVEN

“I THOUGHT YOU would never come!” Rico exclaimed at once. “What has been happening that you ignore my letter?”

“Your letter?” she echoed dazedly. “I ... I forgot to open it. Rico, you shouldn’t be here. You know that!”

The handsome eyes were flashing feverishly, he looked imploring. “Even though I am in the depths of uncertainty, I have remembered that you must have the excuse for my presence here. Very well, I come at this time because I know Jacinto is resting and we can talk without fear of interruptions by servants. If anyone should come I will say that I have not seen the child since his birthday and wished to give him my felicitations. It is a pity that I chose a time when he sleeps!”

“You’re too glib with your excuses. For heaven’s sake go. This could cause no end of trouble!”

“But it will not, because I have thought it out. I came by the back stairs, and I know this place—that there is no movement between the hours of two and four. Linda, that letter I sent you—in it, I begged you to meet me yesterday afternoon down the road. You did not come and I have been shattered by indecision. So I have to see you now. There is something only you can do for me.”

“That can’t be so. I’m still a stranger here.”

“But no!” He came forward, shoulders lifted, hands thrown out in a despairing gesture. Animated, those good looks of his were devastating. “Mike Cullum has told me that you have discovered Luis will help me if I show that I am sincere in my wish to start this plane service.”

“The Marquez did say he would. But, Rico...”

“Please. This is what you call death and life for me, my little pigeon. Yesterday I have a letter from this pilot friend of mine in Lisbon, who wishes us to be partners. This tourist has money and he is interested in the scheme, but he would not finance the whole, of it himself. My friend has told him that I am a cousin of the Marquez de Filano, and the man is elated by the possibility of being associated with Luis in business. I can pretend to Luis that it was I who found this tourist!”

“But it wouldn’t be enough,” she protested, anxious for him in spite of the gaps in his integrity. “After all, from Luis’ angle the money is the least of it.”

“There is more, my Linda.” He was speaking so fast that every consonant was blurred. “My friend thinks we can persuade the man to let us make a trial trip to Merida. His plane carries four passengers and their luggage. We propose to carry four passengers also, and some freight—which will have to be free of charge as we are not licensed. There are fields good enough for an experimental landing outside the town, and once we have landed we will have made our case. You see?”

She said slowly, “Luis doesn’t doubt that you can fly.
