Chapter Thirty One

DEAD MAN’S GAMBIT

THE TWO MEN SAT STILL covered in their own blood, remaining somehow suspended in the chairs. Until Lord Dottington quickly lowered his hands, causing the two now lifeless bodies to hit the table with a loud, heavy thump of dead weight.

A thousand horror movies and murder scenes raced around in Dr Mubarak’s mind as his life began to flash before his eyes. Allah had delivered him to a demon Jinn. He had seen many marvelous and supernatural events in his life; he’d done his PhD in occult studies and esoteric phenomena at Oxford.

He’d witnessed yogis levitating off the ground, Chinese masters enduring incredible pain, and monks healing patients with chi, Big Om chanting. He’d even seen the occasional exorcism.

But what he just witnessed tonight was beyond anything his previous experiences could have prepared him for.

His face was white with fear. He felt his hand gripping his chest and felt sure he was having another mild stroke, like the one he had just a year ago upon hearing about the tragic death of his only son.

“Dr Mubarak. There is no need for alarm, I have no intention of harming you. At least not today,” said Lord Dottington.

Dr Mubarak was frightened and fascinated. His instincts told him to run, but after what he just witnessed, he’d deduced running would be a fool's errand. He began to recite prayer from the Holy Quran.

“Dr Mubarak, it's unfortunate we had to end our business in such an unpleasant manner. But sometimes necessity overrules even the best of plans, don’t you agree.” Dottington said calmly.

Of course, Lord Dottington. Dr Mubarak swallowed and continued.

“May I ask how what I just saw was possible?”
