CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

As they rode up in the lift to the fifth floor of New Scotland Yard, Clocks tapped his toe against the metal wall and looked up at the digital floor indicator.

‘This is gonna be a riot,’ Paterson said.

Clocks shook his head. ‘Don’t think so, Ray. I think we might have pushed him a bit too far this time. You heard him on the phone. I thought he was gonna burst a bollock.’

‘Shame he didn’t.’ Paterson couldn’t help but grin at the thought of the Commissioner of Police for the Metropolis actually bursting one of his testicles.

‘I’m pissed at that superintendent though. Didn’t think he’d grass us up like that.’

‘He had to, John. The story would have got out one way or the other. Better it comes straight from the horse’s mouth, I suppose. Just hope he hasn’t mentioned you assaulting him and making him look like an idiot in front of his troops.’

‘I bet he’s skipped over that bit,’ said Clocks.

‘I’ll bet. Right, listen to me . . . For the last time. This is on me. You tell him I misled you about the trip to Hertfordshire. Far as you’re concerned, we had authority.’

‘I did have authority. From you.’

Paterson nodded. ‘That’s it. Stick with what I’ve told you. At least he might leave you on the case.’

‘Fuck him. If he boots you, he boots me. Simple as. If he don’t, I’ll throw a sickie with a bit of the ol’ stress and he can sort the shit ’imself, can’t ’e?’

The lift chimed and the doors slid open onto the fifth floor. They walked along a corridor lined with photographs of previous commissioners until they came to the reception desk.

‘All right, love?’ said Clocks. ‘Paterson and Clocks here to see the commissioner for our weekly bollocking.’ He took a quick look around the reception area. ‘Where’s Sue? On ’oliday?’

The lady behind the counter, whose lapel badge revealed her to be Donna Leem, was on a temporary contract from an agency, replacing the full-time receptionist, Susan Adams.

‘No. I’m afraid she’s gone sick for a while. I’m standing in.’

‘Sick? Whassamatter with her? Nothing bad, is it?’

‘I think she’s sick of him.’ She jerked her head towards Anderson’s office. ‘Likes to shout a lot, doesn’t he?’

Clocks nodded. ‘Yeah, he does. Don’t take no notice of him, love. He’s a dick.’

Donna smiled.

‘Can we go straight in?’ asked Paterson.

‘Afraid not. He told me to tell you to wait outside and to let him know when you’ve arrived.’

‘Oops,’ Clocks said. ‘Naughty schoolboy time for us. No worries, love. We’ll be good boys.’ They sauntered off toward the waiting area. Clocks turned back to Donna. ‘Listen, love. We could be waiting here a while so, no pressure or anything, but Sue always used to bring us a cup of tea and a sticky bun while we wait. You gonna be a sweetheart too?’ He gave her a wide smile and a thumbs up.

Fifteen minutes later, Clocks, with his feet resting on the edge of a magazine-laden
