Tlic suboxide of copper is a feeble boso, but its snlte arc not eofiily oh tained by ilirect union with npids. for these gi^nerally decompose it into metallic copper and oxide of copper, which combines with the acid. In the moist state it is slowly o.\jdisod by the air. Ammonia ilissolves the suboxide, forming a sohition which is perfectly colourless until it is allowed to come into contact with air, wh«n it assumes a tine blue colour* ^ becoming convertc^l into au ainmouiucal solution of the oxide. If the I blue solution bo pLicod in a stoppered bottle (quite filled with it) with a strip of chian copper, it will graihuiUy he(X>me colourless, the oxide being again reduced to suhoxidti, a portion of the copper being dissolved. Wlien copper filings are shaken with ammonia in a bottle of air, the same blue solution is obtained, the oxidation uf the cupper lining ultc-nded with a simultaneous oxidatinn of a portlun of tho auunonia, and its conversion into nitrous acid, so that white fumes of nitrite of ammonia are formed iu thu upper jHirt of the boUle. If the blue solution be poureil into a large ipiantity of wat^-r, a liglit blue precipitate of hydrated oxide of copper is obtained. Tho ammoniacat solution of oxide of copper has the luiuflual pro]>erty of dissolving paper, cotton, tow, and oUier variotics of cellulose, this substance beuig rcpxucipitaUxl from tho »oluUou ou adding an acid.
