She gave him a critical look, up and down. "Yeah? Let me guess. About your age, since you don't like twinks or guys who could be mistaken for college kids. Strong, for sure. Tall and all man. Probably an inch or two taller than you, and built a bit wider. Someone very, very male. Because I'm small and very, very female."

It was Mal's turn to roll his eyes. "I like my women to be women and my men to be men?" "Something like that." She beamed at him. "You'd want to be rougher with a guy. You'd want everything to remind you that it was a man, that you were doing something very different than you do with women."

Mal stared at her. "Are we going to dance or not?"

"Oh, we will." She took a step toward him and he took one back, not liking the way she was smiling at him. "So, it's clear that I know things, yes? I know you?"

Not seeing a graceful way to avoid answering the question, Mal said, "Sure. I never said you don't. You know stuff." She took another step forward and he moved back, just as the music finally cued up. "I know that you want to deny with everything you are that you're dating him. I know that you probably even believe that you're just messing around."

Mal made himself stay where he was the next time she came toward him. "Yeah? What makes you say that, baby?" "Don't call me 'baby,'" she said mildly. Her body was already moving to the music and he doubted she even knew it. "I know that you're at least intrigued by this man because you know what his parents do. Tell me why you think they won't like you. And then I want you to tell me why you've even considered what they'd think."

"Oh, for the love of God." Mal rubbed one hand over his face and reached for her. "Just dance, okay?"

"Tell me." She laughed at him and stepped into his arms, wordlessly letting him lead her in the steps to an unrefined mambo. "He told me, okay? His parents are trying hard to be okay with him being gay, but down deep they're still struggling. And then he told me his brother is cool with that, but won't be fond of the whole white guy thing. Oh, and then there's the added bonus of me being a fire fighter, which will piss all of them off."

Trish narrowed her eyes at him. "Okay, sweetheart, you listen to me. One, you need to work on your hips, you're not moving as far to the right as you are to the left. Two, you're a god damn hero, and don't let anyone tell you different. Three, you are so, so already this man's boyfriend. When do I get to meet him?"

Mal sighed and shook his head. "Probably as soon as you figure out a legitimate way to make it happen. But I've made it very clear to Will that I don't want a relationship.
