I spent hours outside with my knives as company. The quiet was good for me, but I’d had my fill. What I wanted next was some real company.

I returned my knives back to their rightful spot in the holster and ventured back inside the house. I wasn’t sure where the guys would be, but I had a good guess where Marvin was based on the time of day.

I slowly walked to the kitchen and smiled when I saw Marvin hunched over the kitchen island. I made sure my footsteps were extra noisy so as not to spook him. The last thing I needed was for him to have a heart attack.

“Marvin?”

His head rose from where he’d been inspecting a cutting board. When he saw me, a smile graced his face. The sight made me think of Gracie, and I once again wondered what the story was between the two of them. I wasn’t close enough to Marvin to ask, but maybe I could get the story from the guys. That is, if they knew anything.

“How are you doing?” He asked with sincerity.

I wrung my hands together. “I’m ok,” I replied somewhat honestly. After some time alone, I really was doing better.

Marvin nodded his head like he understood me perfectly. It made me wonder just how much about me the guys had told him. “Do you want to cook with me?” He surprised me by asking.

I thought back to what felt like a lifetime ago when I stood in that kitchen and longed to know how to cook. I swore Marvin could read my damn mind. “I would love to. But just warning you, I have no idea what I’m doing.”

A wide smile that showed all my teeth appeared on my face when Marvin pulled a light blue apron with lace detailing on it from a drawer. My name was embroidered across the chest, just above a large pocket. I hesitantly rounded the counter and reached for the apron.

“It’s-it’s beautiful,” I whispered in awe. I slipped the top part over my head and Marvin tied the back. It fit perfectly. I smoothed the fabric with my palms and swallowed the lump forming in my throat.

“I had it made for you. I was hoping you might want to cook with me at some point. I love my boys, but they’re useless in the kitchen. When they told me you were coming for the holidays, I got my hopes up.”

Emotion choked me. “You got this for me? But, you didn’t even know me,” I pointed out, confused.

Marvin smiled softly and laid an open hand on my shoulder. “But I did. Sebastian, Connor, and Gray told me all about you. I knew when they called me the first time, it was the day after they met you, I think, that you had to be someone special. They’d never mentioned anyone to me before.”

My hands shook as I reached out to wrap my arms around Marvin’s middle. “I don’t know how much they told you, but I’ve never really had a family before.
