Faith

An Unexpected Boatload

We live by faith, not by sight. —2 CORINTHIANS 5:7 NIV

Luke 5:1–11 recounts a strange fish story. Peter, a professional fisherman, had fished all night long without success. Jesus came along and told him to go back out into deep water “and let down the nets for a catch” (Luke 5:4 NIV). Peter reminded Jesus that his luck hadn’t been good the night before, but because Jesus said so, Peter faithfully cast off. Can you imagine the reaction of bystanders when Peter hauled in a boatload of fish? What a miracle.

Now imagine you’ve spent an entire day trying to settle squabbles between your toddlers or teens while attempting to clean the house, do the laundry, and stretch the money left in the checking account to cover the mountain of groceries that have to be purchased to keep everyone fed. You’ve just about torn your hair out, but along comes Jesus, walking along the shoreline of your hassles, suggesting that you jump right back into the middle of them. At this point you have a choice to make—and so did Peter. The true miracle illustrated in Luke 5 is not the unexpected boatload of fish. The deeper miracle was Peter’s faith.

Think about it. Here was a man who fished for a living. He knew the habits of fish, the ins and outs of sunlight and water temperatures, and where to find the denizens of the deep. Along comes Jesus—a carpenter by trade and a preacher by God’s calling—with instructions to fish where Peter is sure there are no fish to be found. Yet there is something in Jesus and in Peter that connect, something that prompts Peter to say, “All right. I’ll give it a try.” That something is faith.

You have that faith, too. You exercise it often without realizing it. Every time you plop down on a kitchen chair, you’re exhibiting faith that the chair will hold you. Every time you place your head in the hands of a hairdresser, you’re exhibiting faith in that individual’s ability to turn your mop into a masterpiece. Every time you turn a car key, flip a light switch, or floss your back teeth you’re exhibiting faith that your action will produce a desired result.

God wants you to have that kind of faith in Him, too. He wants you to rely on Him for everything you do, so that no matter what you face in your daily life as a mom you can trust Him with as much abandon as you do your favorite kitchen chair. God wants to connect with you like Jesus did with Peter so that when you’re overwhelmed with mothering, feeling like there’s no end in sight, you can look God squarely in the eye and plunge back into the middle of family life, hoping and trusting He’ll set everything to rights.

How do you get that connection, that faith in God? God’s Word says start by believing in what you see Him doing. Watch for God’s answers to your prayers, for His interaction in your life and in your kids’ lives.
