If I had listened to my intuition, if I had checked in with that knowing feeling and chosen fact over feeling . . . at the very least, it would have saved me, Chad, and a bunch of our loved ones a whole lot of hurt, embarrassment, and anger.
Why is it that weâll get married to anxiety but we tell our intuition to shut its mouth and go to bed without supper? For one, itâs hard to know the difference until youâre on the wrong side of an unwise choice. Itâs easy to look back and say, âI wish Iâd slowed down. I wish Iâd thought about that a little longer.â This is especially true if youâve dealt with any kind of real anxiety. When people tell you to âtrust your gut,â you want to be like, âCool, well yesterday my gut told me it was a good idea to call in sick to work, eat ice cream straight out the tub, and not leave my house all day.â
Our anxiety has robbed many of us of the ability to check in with that inner voiceâthe voice of the Holy Spirit, the voice of God.
So letâs break it down. How do you know the difference?
One test is to ask, âAm I just scared? Or is it something more?â
Like, if youâre afraid of flying and youâre waiting to board the plane and all of a sudden your heart starts racing, your palms are sweaty, and you canât catch your breath. Your anxiety will try to trick you into thinking thatâs intuition, that itâs a sign your plane is going to explode in midair.
But all those thoughts are based in fear and not in fact. Thatâs not your intuition talking; thatâs your crazy.
One of the biggest differences between anxiety and intuition is the way they make you feel. Since intuition is from God, it should leave you feeling a little more relaxed, a little more at peace. But anxiety? Anxiety is not of God. I personally think anxiety is from the pit of hell. And it comes on you like a cold grip around your heart, making you feel nauseous, panicky, and unsure.
Take me riding in the car with Chad, for example. The words âI donât feel right about thisâ just fell out of my mouth. I hadnât even realized I was thinking that. And when I said it, I had none of the symptoms that my usual anxiety brings: racing pulse, manic thoughts, a sense of overwhelming dread and doom. Actually, I felt better after saying those words out loud.
Listen to the way Proverbs 2:6â10 explains intuition from God:
For the LORD gives [skillful and godly] wisdom;
From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
He stores away sound wisdom for the righteous [those who are in
right standing with Him];
He is a shield to those who walk in integrity [those of honorable
character and moral courage],
He guards the paths of justice;
And He preserves the way of His saints (believers).
Then you will understand righteousness and justice [in every
circumstance]
And integrity and every good path.
