If I had listened to my intuition, if I had checked in with that knowing feeling and chosen fact over feeling . . . at the very least, it would have saved me, Chad, and a bunch of our loved ones a whole lot of hurt, embarrassment, and anger.

Why is it that we’ll get married to anxiety but we tell our intuition to shut its mouth and go to bed without supper? For one, it’s hard to know the difference until you’re on the wrong side of an unwise choice. It’s easy to look back and say, “I wish I’d slowed down. I wish I’d thought about that a little longer.” This is especially true if you’ve dealt with any kind of real anxiety. When people tell you to “trust your gut,” you want to be like, “Cool, well yesterday my gut told me it was a good idea to call in sick to work, eat ice cream straight out the tub, and not leave my house all day.”

Our anxiety has robbed many of us of the ability to check in with that inner voice—the voice of the Holy Spirit, the voice of God.

So let’s break it down. How do you know the difference?

One test is to ask, “Am I just scared? Or is it something more?”

Like, if you’re afraid of flying and you’re waiting to board the plane and all of a sudden your heart starts racing, your palms are sweaty, and you can’t catch your breath. Your anxiety will try to trick you into thinking that’s intuition, that it’s a sign your plane is going to explode in midair.

But all those thoughts are based in fear and not in fact. That’s not your intuition talking; that’s your crazy.

One of the biggest differences between anxiety and intuition is the way they make you feel. Since intuition is from God, it should leave you feeling a little more relaxed, a little more at peace. But anxiety? Anxiety is not of God. I personally think anxiety is from the pit of hell. And it comes on you like a cold grip around your heart, making you feel nauseous, panicky, and unsure.

Take me riding in the car with Chad, for example. The words “I don’t feel right about this” just fell out of my mouth. I hadn’t even realized I was thinking that. And when I said it, I had none of the symptoms that my usual anxiety brings: racing pulse, manic thoughts, a sense of overwhelming dread and doom. Actually, I felt better after saying those words out loud.

Listen to the way Proverbs 2:6–10 explains intuition from God:

For the LORD gives [skillful and godly] wisdom;

From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.

He stores away sound wisdom for the righteous [those who are in

right standing with Him];

He is a shield to those who walk in integrity [those of honorable

character and moral courage],

He guards the paths of justice;

And He preserves the way of His saints (believers).

Then you will understand righteousness and justice [in every

circumstance]

And integrity and every good path.
