CHAPTER 21

LEAH

Marco is sitting in a chair in Hunter’s living room with a glass of wine in his hand, looking relaxed and at home. I’m both shocked and pleasantly surprised that Marco has not only been invited into Hunter’s home for dinner, something that is usually reserved for family or close work friends such as myself, but he’s handling himself unbelievably well.

The topic meanders from the subject we’ve all come here to discuss. The two men talk about sports, and Meghan and I discuss whether they should replace the flooring in this room with something lighter. Eventually, Hunter gets back to the topic at hand.

“I’m going to level with you, Marco.” His tone is serious but not impolite. “I’ve known your father for a long time. He’s involved in some sketchy deals. In this line of work, there are different shades of gray. Some people find certain areas more acceptable than others. If your father is involved in this sex trafficking ring, and I have every reason to believe he is, it wouldn’t be the first time I’ve seen him into something that doesn’t sit well with me. He’s been involved in other situations that have left a bad taste in my mouth, but this would be the worst. This would be the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

Marco looks from Hunter to me for a moment. All I can do is shrug. I’m not exactly clear on what Hunter is speaking of, but a person can’t be in this business in this city and not understand that Victor Velasco is an opportunist. He will get involved in whatever deal is most likely to make him big bucks quickly. Whether those dealings are shady isn’t usually his first concern. Sometimes it isn’t his concern at all.

“I know my father is often on the wrong side of the law,” Marco begins. His tone and rate of speaking tell me he is weighing his words carefully. “I have seen him make many transactions over the years that are not what I would do. I’ve had to be involved in some of them because of my position in the company, but that’s part of the reason I wanted to quit working for him. That being said, the vast majority of his dealings are in drugs, money laundering, weapons, and the occasional ransom of someone he believes has been financially blessed enough to afford to get out of that sort of situation via their checkbook. I have never heard him mention sex trafficking. Not once.”

“Maybe he doesn’t want you to know about that part of the business because he’s afraid you’ll have a problem with it and either turn him in or mess it up for him,” Meghan offers.

Marco looks at her for a long moment, considering her statement. I suppose he’s wondering how she fits into all of this. Is she just Hunter’s fiancée, or does she have more invested here? He has probably gathered enough information about the situation with Waylen Nyx to know she isn’t just an innocent bystander anymore.
