Chapter Ten
Felix concentrated on stirring the rice as he felt Nick come to lean against the counter beside him. Nick had a look about him, the irritated one he got when his curiosity got the better of him. He elbowed Felix in the kidney, making him stop and glance up.
“What?” Felix put the spoon down and crossed his arms with a sigh. “Whatever it is, spit it out.”
Nick smirked at him, acknowledging how well they knew each other. “Did you see anything interesting when you were spying on Westie?”
Felix cocked an eyebrow. “I thought you said that was a waste of my time?”
“It is, but that doesn’t mean I’m not interested in knowing what you saw. If anything.”
All three of them stared at him expectantly, and Felix caught Jamie’s gaze. He hadn’t wanted to get Jamie involved in this part. Weston was a dangerous man, whether he had anything to do with Michael’s disappearance or not. But since Felix wasn’t going to be watching the house anymore, what could it hurt? If he stopped and considered it rationally, it wasn’t as though anything he’d seen could be incriminating evidence.
“Not much, really. You know how I told you that he's been at the house a lot more in the past two weeks?” He paused, looking up and noting Nick’s expression. Felix attempted to keep the sarcasm out of his voice as he said, “Probably all the nice weather we’ve been having.”
“Probably.” The sudden interest on Nick’s face wasn’t helpful at all. Felix needed him to be the voice of reason.
“Anyway, a couple of days ago, he had visitors. The first people I’ve seen going to the house since I’ve been watching it.” Christ, when he said it out loud like that, it sounded ridiculous. What had he been thinking? He was lucky not to have got himself arrested, and how would that have looked on his CV? He shook off the uncomfortable feeling and carried on, eager to get it all out and forget about it. “They didn’t stay long, but they came back on Tuesday and it looked like they were staying while Weston left. I haven’t been back since, so I don’t know for sure. He had a small suitcase with him, so….”
They lapsed into silence, everyone mulling over what he’d just said. Felix pushed away the feeling of stupidity that continued to niggle at him. He wished he’d never fucking said anything in the first place. When he glanced up, Jamie was watching him, his head cocked slightly to the side as though considering something. That couldn’t be good. Felix didn’t want Jamie having any thoughts concerning Weston.
Adam sighed and walked over to the fridge to get more beer. He handed them out, giving Felix his last. “Let’s face it, Weston’s probably shady as fuck, but nothing you saw is evidence of a crime. Let it go, and let the police do their job. I’m sure he’ll slip up at some point in his life and they’ll get him.
