Declan looked in the mirror over the bathroom sink, and adjusted his tie. Angie had sent his things as he’d asked her to do. And she picked his nicest ties. When he’d checked in with her the day before, she’d said that the office had taken up a collection for flowers. She’d asked for the address of the church. She was a good assistant and friend. He didn’t have many friends—not really. She was as close as it came.

As he shrugged on his suit jacket, and took the lint roller to it, he gave some thought to his life in New York. The view from his bedroom window was priceless. The suit he wore was nearly two thousand dollars, and custom made. The watch on his arm was a Rolex. Did any of that matter? Most nights, dinner was carryout from somewhere near his condo. Companionship of a nice woman wasn’t very often had either, but usually if he asked for a dinner date, he could get one.

But here, where he was raised, he had people. His parents were getting older now, and Stacy wouldn’t be there to take care of them. And what about her kids? They needed to be around his family so that her memory wouldn’t be lost.

He looked at the bloodshot, tired eyes in the mirror looking back at him. Everything he’d ever wanted, he had in New York. When had he decided he didn’t want a family? Vaughn was a son-of-a-bitch that he would punch in the face at least one more time for having an affair with his sister, but he’d been a friend. And Declan was smart enough to understand that it took two to tango. Something deeper must have been going on with his sister to have her turn to Vaughn. If he stayed around, maybe he could find out what that was.

The knock on the bathroom door had him snapping out of his sorrowful mood. He opened the door to see his mother standing there in a dress he hadn’t seen since he was a child. And if he remembered correctly, Stacy had had a matching one.

“Mom, you look lovely,” he said moving in and kissing her on the cheek.

“And you sure do clean up nice,” she said patting his cheek. “The car has arrived.”

“I’ll be right down.”

She gave him a nod and headed for the stairs. Declan wondered if she’d taken some of those pills the hospital had given her, just to get through the day. Of all days, he assumed she’d be a wreck, and she looked to be functioning just fine.

One more look in the mirror, and he decided that he looked good enough to accept the condolences of the people he’d left behind. How could anyone face a day that they knew would be filled with complete sadness. There simply wasn’t any good to come from the day, he thought. If his mother didn’t end up back in the hospital, he’d be surprised.

His parents waited at the bottom of the staircase for him.
