TWENTY-SIX

Kendra's bedroom door was closed when Garth entered the house. He stood in the hall, water dripping from his hair and jeans, staring at this barrier, then shook his head slightly.

After changing into dry clothes, Garth went to the sunroom to stoke the fireplace with wood against the forthcoming chilly evening. He caught movement in the doorway, glanced up at Kendra, then returned to his chore.

Kendra came near and stood waiting patiently.

Garth finally finished and looked at her.

Kendra's face wore a pained expression. "I'm frigid," she said.

Garth didn't understand at first. "What?"

"I can't—I don't enjoy sex. I don't like it, to tell you the truth. That's why I—when we—I just wanted you to know that what happened, it wasn't your fault. It's me, Garth. Please don't take it personally."

Garth leaned against the mantel. "What are you talking about, Kendra?"

She walked away from him and sat in her favorite chair next to the windows. "It's what he did to me. You remember you asked me once how I came to be with Tony and I told you my dad owed him a favor and I was it? It's only fair I tell you the whole story, Garth. I owe it to you more than anyone, I guess."

Garth was silent as he continued to regard her, waiting to hear what she had to say.

"I've known Tony since I was ten. He and my father were in cahoots, I guess you could say. My dad was a farmer, owned a lot of acreage, and there was a hidden airstrip on his property Tony used for moving his firearms and drugs. He also grew marijuana there, with my dad." Kendra noticed Sarge sitting on the floor in front of the chair, staring at her. She reached down, scooped him up, put his face to hers, and kissed his forehead. She settled him in her lap and stroked his side, immediately eliciting loud noises of content from the cat.

Garth waited patiently.

"When I was younger, I really liked him. He'd bring me gifts when he came to see my father, always tell me what a beautiful girl I was, tease me, spend time with me. Something I never got from my own dad." She gave him an embarrassed look. "I just ate it up. I couldn't wait to see him, couldn't wait to see what he had brought me."

"You were just a kid, Keni."

Ignoring this, she continued. "I went to live with him when I was fourteen. My mother had disappeared, just run off, my dad said. He told me that he owed Tony for a favor he had done him, and the only payment he would accept was me." She glanced at Garth and the pain was evident on her face. "Tony wanted a wife, but that wife had to be the perfect mate for him. He wanted someone he could train how to act, how to look, so what better way than to take a young girl who meets whatever parameters you have set for that wife and mold her into who you want her to be?" Her tone was sarcastic.
