Chapter Fourteen

Birdie

“Bailey has a date with one of the new ER doctors.”

Layla’s words slammed into me like a brick wall. “What?”

“Yeah,” Layla laughed. “I didn’t know she had it in her, but she said she was not going to stand by and let someone else snag him.” Layla slammed her locker shut and hitched her purse on her shoulder.

“Which one?”

“Which one what?” Layla asked.

“Doctor,” I hissed. “Which doctor is she going out with?”

Layla reared back and frowned. “Uh, I can’t remember which one.”

God, I hoped it wasn’t Aaron.

I still needed to figure out what I was going to do.

Aaron Gibbs and I had attended the same college, and we did our residency together.

We also lived with each other and were engaged.

“Are you okay?” Layla asked. She stepped toward me and put her hand on my shoulder. “Are you upset that Bailey is going out with one of the new doctors? I didn’t think you would care since you and Easy are a thing.”

I cared if Bailey was dating Aaron, and that wasn’t because I wanted to date him.

Aaron was not a good person. Not at all.

“No, no,” I mumbled. I grabbed my bag and slammed my locker shut. “I am dating Easy; I was just surprised to hear Bailey managed to get a date with one of the new doctors before they even worked a shift.”

I couldn’t get so upset about Bailey dating Aaron because I didn’t even know if she was dating him. She could have set her sights on Neil, and I was worrying for nothing. I would still have to figure out what I was going to do about Aaron, though.

Layla shrugged. “I guess doctors move faster than some.” She frowned and her shoulders slumped. “Unlike Snapper. I sent him a text the same day you gave me his number, and he still hasn’t replied.”

Ouch. That sucked. “Maybe he is busy, Layla, and doesn’t want to reply until he has the time to give you.”

Layla rolled her eyes. “Right, I’m sure that’s what it is. I think I am just destined to be single for the rest of my life.”

“Layla,” I chuckled. “You aren’t even in your thirties. I don’t think you should banish yourself to be an old maid just yet.”

My phone buzzed, and I pulled it out of my pocket to see a text from Easy. Busting out of here. Come to the clubhouse for a welcome home party tonight?

“God,” Layla moaned. “It’s Easy, isn’t it? You just got this loopy smile on your face.”

“I did not get a loopy smile,” I insisted. I opened the message and did get a loopy smile. I sent him a quick reply and grabbed Layla’s hand.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

“I’m going to Easy’s, and you’re coming with me.”

“Uh, no,” she squirmed. “I am not interested in spending my night as the third wheel.”

I pulled her through the locker room and over to the elevator. “You’re coming with, and you’re not going to be the third wheel because Easy said the whole club is throwing a welcome home dinner.
