By the time Cain, Culum, and Clinger returned, it was after dark and all the draperies had been hung in the living room. Of course Cain didn’t even notice the new drapes. He was too busy joking around with Culum. It made Jim smile to see them get along so well. But it also caused a pull in Jim’s chest that Cain had kept Culum out so late. It was way after his bedtime and he had to get up for school the next day.

Helen had been fussing around with the drapes. When she saw them walk into the living room she gasped and said, “You’re filthy, Culum. You’ll need a bath and a shower.”

“We played in the stream,” Culum said. “We saw a big snake and Clinger jumped in to get it.”

Jim glanced at the dog. He was as filthy as Culum. His coat was still damp and he smelled fishy. “It looks like Clinger’s going to need a bath, too. Otherwise he’s not sleeping in your room tonight in that condition.” Jim knew that wouldn’t happen. The dog refused to sleep anywhere but next to Culum’s bed.

Cain shrugged. His jeans were mudstained, his white T-shirt was damp, and he smelled worse than the dog. He even had mud stains on his face. “He’s not that bad. He just has to dry off a little.”

Jim frowned. “He needs a bath and so do you. But you’re going to help me bathe him first.” Jim glanced at his mom. “Would you take Culum upstairs and get him ready for bed.”

“Sure I will,” Helen said. She crossed to where Culum was standing and reached for his hand. “I’ll get him all cleaned up and then I’ll get your dad to read him a story.” (Radcliff had gone down to the basement to put the tools away.) “I’ll give him a shout downstairs before we go up.”

Jim thanked her and said he wouldn’t be long. He told Culum he’d bring Clinger up to his room as soon as the dog was clean. Then he went outside with Cain and the dog through the back door in the kitchen. On the way, he flipped on the outside lights and grabbed a bottle of pet shampoo and old towels from a shelf next to the back door. There was an outdoor shower not far from the back door they would eventually remove. They were planning to put in a swimming pool and build a pool house and they wouldn’t need the old shower. There was nothing about it that had any historical significance. But it did come in handy for bathing Clinger.

Jim turned on the water and Cain held Clinger in place. Cain laughed and said, “Too bad we aren’t alone. I could just strip down and shower with Clinger right now. You could soap up my muscles and wash me off just like you wash my dad.”

“Don’t be glib,” Jim said. He actually wanted to laugh. When Cain made dumb jokes like this it was hard not to laugh.
