Chapter 11

I spent more time at Thai Alexander’s, my favorite designer’s studio, than I had originally planned. She and I reconnected since I moved back to Houston. She designed my prom dress in high school, but her business had tripled since then. I had several pieces being made, a few for Shanay, several for me, and a couple for Devon. Since I loved fashion so much, Devon had been encouraging me to have more one of a kind pieces created. Our Thanksgiving outfits had turned out amazing. I had a turquoise and gold baby doll dress made for Shanay’s first Thanksgiving holiday. The dress turned out so nice. I had the same design pattern used to make my pencil skirt, and Devon’s custom bowtie.

I was also there to approve and finalize our engagement party outfits. The theme was red, white, and silver. My dress was twofold. The first layer was a short, all-white, lace high collar dress. To go over the dress was a spectacular cherry red blazer/maxi combo. The top portion was made like a blazer, with a buttoned waist, and from the waist down the blazer opened up and flared out like a maxi dress until it hit the floor. It was opened from the waist down, allowing my endless legs to make their extravagant entrance as well. It was impeccably designed, a one of a kind number. It flowed magnificently and the lace dress fit my curves very well. Devon’s sports coat was superbly tailored. His blazer was white, lined with ruby red satin. I selected a red matching tie and handkerchief to accompany the color theme. I sat down with Terry as she sketched out several other pieces I wanted made. After almost three hours, I walked out feeling excited about the finished products that would be ready for pick up this coming Monday.

Next, I stopped by Solata for a salad. As I ate, I began daydreaming about how my fairy tale was finally starting to align. Just a year ago I was with Sterling, and at that time we were happy. We were at that falling in love point in our relationship back then; but then he got hurt. Then came Kim, the seductress who was manufactured into Sterling’s life by his hateful mom. She was the beginning of the end for me and Sterling. It was this weekend a year ago that Sterling got hurt. Wow how time flies! I thought. A year ago, Devon and I were barely on speaking terms, and now a year later we were living together, raising Shanay as a family, and we were two weeks away from publicly announcing our engagement. My mind swirled back and forth from the past to the present as I dined alone. I began scrolling through Facebook on my tablet, looking at memories from last year; then a schedule reminder popped up on my screen. It read, “Call Ms. Wright”. I finished up my meal and hopped in the car. I looked at my email from yesterday and dialed Ms.
