Half an hour later, the ladies made their way back and Linda grabbed George’s hand and insisted that he too go see the beautiful artwork.

Cheri once again seemed to disappear, returning with fresh drinks for the gentlemen.

James snagged a passing waiter and whispered something. A few minutes later, the waiter was back with a fresh glass of scotch.

Taking the glass from the waiter, he handed it to Cheri and took her glass of sparkling water from her. “John, I think Cheri is off duty for the night, wouldn’t you agree?”

John nodded in agreement. “Of course. You did a great job, Cheri. Thank you.”

Cheri studied the man in front of her. Was he flirting with her, or did he just not want to be the only one drinking? “Thank you,” she whispered, raised her glass in salute, and adding, “To an interesting evening.” Then she took a sip of the scotch.

It had been a while since she had enjoyed a glass of Livet and she savored the sip. It warmed her instantly and she smiled at the glow of warmth.

Sandy motioned toward the front door. “Oh, oh. It looks like Mrs. Wousley hasn’t quite given up.”

Cheri forced herself not to look in the direction Sandy had indicated but asked, “What do you mean?”

“She’s making a beeline this way,” John answered her question.

James put his hand on the small of her back, leaning into her and whispered, “Ready to play your part?”

Cheri looked up into his eyes as seductively as she knew, answering, “Honey, I was born ready.”

Reaching up, she toyed with his tie as he looked over to Sandy and John, winking to ensure they played their part as well.

James could sense that Mrs. Wousley was nearby so he knocked the act up a notch. Intimately sliding his hand up her back, he gently caressed the nape of her neck. “Having a good time, honey?” He asked in a husky voice.

Cheri smiled up at him. “I am. You?”

“I couldn’t think of anyone I’d rather be with,” was his romantic answer. And by the look on her face, it was one which Mrs. Wousley obviously had also heard.

“Mr. Hogan, tell me. Are you in the habit of lying to the public?”

“Excuse me?” James frowned at the woman.

“You lied to me!” She replied bluntly.

“When was that, Mrs. Wousley?”

“You and this tramp are not dating,” she spat out in anger.

“First of all, to call this young lady a tramp is defamation of character, and you of all people should be careful about making statements like that. Second, whether or not Ms. Wood and I are dating is none of your business. If it were, I’d tell you truthfully that Ms. Wood is my date this evening.”

“Your friend George Bateman claims otherwise.”

“My friend, Mr. Bateman, knows that I don’t flaunt my personal relationships and would have told you that Ms. Wood was asked to lend assistance as requested by her boss, also true. Now, if you will excuse us, you have insulted and interrupted us long enough.
