AS I WAITED FOR MY AUNT to call to let me know that she was in AC, I hung out with Lou, and when I wasnât with him, I was hustling poker games. I was on a losing streak and it was screwing up my confidence. When I wasnât playing, I was at Michaelâs complaining about my streak and Michael was telling me about how the eighties had only just started but he didnât like the start at all.
âI want to go back in time,â he said.
âYou canât,â I told him.
âIâm going to be a father,â he said. âLillian is pregnant.â
âItâs what you want,â I said.
âI donât want a kid of mine growing up in a world we got now. I want a world filled with good vibrations,â he said. âJust like Brian Wilson wrote.â
âSounds good,â I said.
When I wasnât with Michael, I was hanging out with Lou getting high and doing all I could not to talk about our situation with Rebecca.
Eventually my Aunt Leigh called to tell me that she was going to Atlantic City. I got on the phone and told Lou to put our plan in motion. My aunt took a bus down to AC and that night, Lou and I met at his office and wrapped Rebeccaâs body in a large dark carpet Lou had picked up and slid her into the bed of his dump truck.
Up to that moment we did lines of cocaine in his office while he answered calls like he did every night dealing with his trucks, dump sites and business deals on his construction machinery. We wanted everything to look as it usually did.
Somewhere near eleven we drove out to Valley Stream and once we got the key, finding it under the mat where my aunt said it would be, we got into the house using only flashlights to find our way. We opened the shack door and spent several hours digging a hole in the ground. We were sweating bullets not only from the physical exertion but also from the coke we continued to do to give us strength.
We both knew it was a working-class neighborhood, meaning that most of the people who lived there had day jobs and worked, so we were counting on that fact helping us not be seen.
Lou also picked up some Black Beauties for us to do to keep us awake and to give us plenty of energy. We also brought along a big gallon of waterâwhich we drank from constantly.
Once the hole was dug, we waited until around two and eased Rebecca out of the trunk and carried her in through the house into the backyard. We both wore black T-shirts and overalls Lou bought for us to better blend into the night.
The house on the right was our only concern. Someone in the house had a bedroom light on all night and though we wanted to wait for it to go out we eventually decided to gamble and make the move.
Once Rebecca was in the shack, we cut open the rug and removed the plastic.
