CHAPTER SEVEN

“AS LONG as you behave, Dr. Bradley plans to transfer you to the regular medical floor today.” Joni checked Mrs. Sain’s telemetry, happy to see her vitals remained stable.

“Me behave?” The woman cackled with delight. “Since when have I ever behaved?”

“Not since I’ve known you, that’s for sure,” Joni agreed, winking at the smiling woman. “But I figure you’re probably getting tired of hanging out around this place.”

“This place isn’t so bad. Around here I have hunky men coming into my room several times a day.”

Uh-oh. “Hunky men?”

“Dr. Bradley.”

“Ah.” She so wasn’t going there. Not with Mrs. Sain. Not with anyone. Samantha had already cornered her several times, trying to get her to spill the goods. Not happening. Mostly because what she and Grant shared had been private. Not something she wanted to impart. Not even to her best friend. For now what was between them was her happy little secret.

“You put that man out of his misery yet?”

Joni’s gaze shot to her patient’s. “What?”

“You know what.” Mrs. Sain shook a bony, clubbed finger at her. “I may be old, but I’m not blind.”

“That’s questionable.” Joni attempted to smother a smile and failed horribly. Seriously, how was she supposed to smother a smile when she felt so amazingly happy?

The woman cackled again. “You’re going to give that boy a run for his money, aren’t you?”

“I’m not going to give that boy—” which seemed like such a wrong descriptive label for Grant when he was definitely all man “—anything.”

“That’s a pity.” Mrs. Sain shook her head as if sorely disappointed. “If I was fifty years younger, I’d give him anything he wanted and then some.”

Joni bit back another smile. Yeah, she’d given Grant everything he wanted and then some, too. Or maybe it had been the other way around. He’d given her everything she wanted, amazing sex, agreed to her rules, left with no fuss, and hadn’t bothered her since except to send her a few very suggestive text messages that had made her burst out laughing then sigh in giddy remembered pleasure.

Her mother had asked about the texts, but Joni hadn’t even told her about Grant. He was her private secret. Sort of.

“No,” she contradicted her patient, just to be as ornery as the older woman, mostly because Mrs. Sain liked the sparring. “You wouldn’t. Fifty years ago you were happily married to Hickerson and wouldn’t have even noticed another man.”

“True.” The woman nodded, closing her eyes for a moment and smiling at whatever memories floated through her mind. When she met Joni’s gaze, she wore a happy expression even if her next words scolded. “But if you don’t get busy, fifty years from now you aren’t going to have memories to look back on.”

Ha, what would Mrs. Sain say if she told her that she’d gotten busy Friday night with the very hunky Dr. Bradley? Very busy. Saturday morning, too, right up until they’d realized they hadn’t had any more condoms. They’d improvised and Joni had no complaints about how satisfied he’d left her.
